Re: small hooks with big eyes?

Why not tie them with a mono loop like a hoppicator?

Re: pfd

You'll have to check with the post office, but I think you could just stuff it in a little flat rate box and ship it for about $5

Re: Good Deeds while fishing?

Oh, nothing all that important. I usually pack out a grocery bag or two of trash every time I fish and I've taken hooks out of a couple people (one being my own Dad and I was the one who hooked him,...

Re: What are some good fly fishing books/novels?

Lefty Kreh's "Fly Rod Trouting" is a good read. It's half stories and half information and it's very nicely written.

Opinions on TFO Lefty Kreh 6' 2pc 2wt

I keep looking at this little 6' 2wt rod when I go into the sporting goods store. It feels pretty good but it's tough to tell without casting it. I'm skeptical because it's only $109. Anyone have one?

Re: Leader requirements?

Part of the purpose of the leader is to taper down in stiffness and size from the fat flyline to the thin tippet. If you went from flyline right to thin tippet (like riptide said, you can do it with...

Re: Materials

This is really fine advice, too. I tie mostly traditional trout patterns (as you can probably tell by the short list I made). Other people probably can't live without closed cell foam, crystal flash,...

Re: what do your dries look like from the bottom?

Pyrex baking dishes are good for this.

Re: Common Cents system, who's using it?

Nope, just doesn't seem necessary.

Cleaning the way I do applies to any and every type of line.

Re: Common Cents system, who's using it?

I just get a line that is the stated weight, go home and put it on, cast in the yard, return/exchange it if it casts poorly.

Re: Mono-loops

I figure out the length of mono I need and tie it in as if it were a loop with the joint in the loop midway down the hook with the ends butted up against each other tightly. This makes a smooth body...

Re: Materials

It feels weird to brainstorm a list without specific patterns to tie, but here goes.

I couldn't be without:
peacock herl,
pheasant tails,
deer body hair,
elk body hair,
partridge, ...

Re: Animal Hair vs Synthetics

I tie my streamers with mostly bucktail for bulk and color and with crystal flash or "supreme hair" for flash. Supreme hair is long strands of synthetic hair that is wavy/kinky like bucktail. It...

Re: cleaning line

I strip the whole line into a bucket of warm soapy water. Swish it around a little (but not enough to tangle it) and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes. Then I get a washcloth wet and leave it fairly...

Re: where can i get my humble fly rod?!

The acrylic reel seat insert and the chunk of acrylic on the handle have to add an ounce of that weight. That stuff isn't light and they used a couple fairly big chunks where most rods use...

Re: Animal Hair vs Synthetics

Do you have particular materials or tying roles in mind? There are many, many different tying materials and they all have different purposes. For example, I use a lot of synthetic materials to add...

Got skunked at Piru Creek

I took my fiance out today for her first day of fishing with a fly. We got totally skunked. It was warm and we just waded wet and the water didn't feel all that cold. I got one strike on a #14...

What are the "must carry" patterns in this area? I fished up from the parking area for about 2 hours today and just missed a couple. One of those was on a #12 letort hopper and the other was a strike...

Re: A newbies dumb question

I do that. It's an instance of my Grandfather taught my Dad like that and he taught me the same way.
