Ok. I weighed the 7,8 and 9 wt orvis graphite rods. They are all very close to the marked weight. I guess they are lighter because they are shorter than modern rods

Weighing it won't tell you anything (although I'm not an expert). The weight means it is designed to cast an 8 weight fly line.

I won't sell the stuff. That is not on the table. This gear is my only link to the knowledge he had. Should I just use the reel oil and grease I use for my spinning reels?
