Re: New 4 wt. reel considerations ?

Sierra Trading Post has the smaller sized Lamson Konic ii for $90 at the moment. I ordered the 1.5 last night to replace my Teton Tioga 4, which has now seized up on me one time too many.

Re: Advice for slow, deep pools.

I'm far from an expert. But I fish the driftless at least a couple times a year (hopefully tomorrow if the water levels aren't too high). When the fish aren't actively feeding on the surface, there's...

Re: Small stream fishing.

That's my favorite thing too. Nothing like spending a summer afternoon in a meadow, fishing a small stream in the driftless, awash in the scent of wild mint. I've not had the chance to ply any...

Re: Pro deals for guides?

Certainly your odds of finding a good knowledgeable sales person declines sharply when shopping at big sporting goods stores rather than at specialty shops.

Re: Pro deals for guides?

While I generally agree with many of the things that you're saying, you do seem to trail off a bit into speculation about the incompetence of sales people (certainly some of them are).

But there...

Re: Fly Rod Car Carriers

I just (mostly) finished putting together my makeshift rooftop carrier. My normal "fishing" vehicle, my Grand Cherokee (the red one in the pictures), is on the fritz and I'm not really inclined to...

Re: Fly Rod Car Carriers

Nice timing on this thread guys, I haven't been on the forum for months, and I do a google search for car top rod carriers, and this lovely current thread comes up. It must be in the air.

Re: Jewels of the Driftless

I was going to ask the same question.

I'm dying to get out there, was going to go last week, but got a bit of the old bronchitis.

Re: Am I over thinking this?

Well, yeah, you probably are over thinking it a bit. Abel makes very nice reels, and it will be nice and well made and light, but it's for a 3wt, so there's a good chance you'll never really use the...

Re: Wow Patagonia (new Atom Stealth pack on the way)

This is what I'm most looking forward to. I've been using a chest pack, and, aside from looking a bit silly (although no sillier than waders), I've been fairly surprised at how often my line gets...

Wow Patagonia (new Atom Stealth pack on the way)

I recently sent a waterproof breathable shell back to Patagonia for a warranty issue.

Now, this was a jacket that I bought in roughly 2002, and I got it on sale. Today I got an email from...

Re: Pro deals for guides?

When I used to be in Outdoor Retail (over a decade ago, so I think I'll be safe), Patagonia's pro-deal on the retail end was 20 or 25% below wholesale for employees of licensed dealers (IIRC). Most...

Streamside Leaders

Just wanted to give a shout out to Streamside Leaders. I've been using their furled leaders on all my rods for the past couple of years (well, his, really... I think it's just one guy). They offer...

Re: Cabelas Fly Lines

Well, I picked up a Prestige DT2F and Prestige Plus WF9F/S from the Bargain Cave for about $15 each with free shipping. Haven't cast them yet. I'm thinking I might buy a higher end line for My...

That factory second at Fishwest changes the math quite a bit.

Re: Budget 5wt question

That would be a heck of deal if you could pull it off, a quick search and I wasn't able to find any way to buy the rod and reel for under $200, let alone have enough left over for line.

Re: Budget 5wt question

I don't own one, but have handled a couple of the Cabelas Wind River reels, the sell for only $30 and punch well above their weight for the price. There are a few folks on here that have them and...

Re: Redington CPX 8wt Line

I also have an 8wt CPX, mine's 9'6". When I first got it I was trying to cast an 8wt line on it and was having a bear of a time. I'm not a particularly skilled caster, but I really couldn't feel it...

Re: Question about rod size

Yes. I have an old 7' 5wt St. Croix. It's not a hugely popular configuration these days, but they're out there. Grey's makes a couple, and I'm sure some other folks do as well.

Where to fish in Wisconsin this summer?

I'm thinking of warmer weather here in Wisconsin. Now that I've finished writing my dissertation I'll have some more time on my hands this summer, and a bit more money than I've had for the last few...

Re: I need a back-up rod. Or do I?

Can't your 4wt be backup for your 3wt and vice versa? I mean, switching one rod weight lighter or heavier isn't going to end your day's fishing. If I broke my 2wt I'd switch up to one of my 4wts, if...

Re: Why skimp on alignment markers?

It's really not a big deal, I still sight down the eyes, but it just seemed to me that it's a weird way to lower costs, if that's in fact what they're doing.

Why skimp on alignment markers?

Got my Mystic Reaper 5wt the other day that my father picked up for my birthday. Haven't cast it yet, but it looks a lot nicer in person than in the pics, the blank really looks nice, almost...

Re: New line doesn't fit reel... how would you proceed?

I had to rather unexpectedly buy a new laptop this month, and pay to repair damage caused when somebody tried to help themselves to my Jeep, so I guess I'd rather not spend any additional money at...

New line doesn't fit reel... how would you proceed?

I bought a DT2F Prestige line from Cabelas on sale to go with my Redington CT 2wt. I had also bought one of those cheap reels from China off of Amazon figuring that I'd probably never need to use...
