Re: What size backpack for gear & tube ?

I have the Glacier Glove fishing pack.

It's not perfect, but as you can see it holds the boots and waders in a separate compartment below the main pack.

Re: Brookie Of A Lifetime

C&R fishing is a bloodsport. You're applying stress to a fish for your own amusement.

That stress may not in itself be enough to kill a trout, but added to other stressors like warm water,...

Re: Fly Shop Owners?

I fish the Catskills and am familiar with most of the shops in the area. The first shop I ever walked into was on the way to the area - not in NY - and within 20 minutes the pontificating owner had...

Re: Weinbrenner "Ultimate Wading Boot" - options to resole

My wife has a pair of these boots and last weekend a few guides in the Catskills saw them and quickly gathered around to praise their virtues. These boots are tanks.

Sadly, they don't seem to be...

Re: Why No Fly Fishing Shows??

^^

Those youtube videos illustrate the problem. There are hours upon hours of that stuff online so why would I pay (subscribe) to watch it? Personally, I find them pretty boring after the first...

Re: Why No Fly Fishing Shows??

The challenge is that the networks don't care about inspirational shows. They care about ratings. And no matter how many beautiful rivers and perfect casts you shoot you'll never tip the balance to a...

Re: Why No Fly Fishing Shows??

You have a number of issues.

The fly world is minuscule compared to the regular fishing world so the network production money allocated to it is ridiculously small and the shows need sponsors to...

Re: Suggestions for the adirondaks

I was just there.

West Canada Lake Wilderness if you're up for challenge.
Pick a likely looking pond or lake on a map. Hike in with a float tube and bug spray. Fish. Camp. Hike out.

Re: Is it possible to enjoy fly fishing when you catch no fish?

I have a better time when I don't catch fish than when I catch too many fish.

The former gives me a reason to to stay or come back. The later sends me home early.

Re: The Drag free drift, is it always required?

"It depends" covers all manner of topics when it comes to fly fishing for trout.

I will say that a trout chasing down prey is different than a hooked fish fighting for its life. I'm talking about...

Thinking of other unusual behavior...

We've all seen trout get spooked. Throw a shadow or splash a fly down and watch them scatter. But hook a fish on the same hole and let it struggle for it's...

Re: The Drag free drift, is it always required?

Unless I'm targetting a specific fish I tend to let my dry flies swing and then hold before I recast. I've caught a lot of fish just holding a fly on the water.

Sometimes, for the hell of it, I...

Re: Furled leader -- bad attitude about them

Furled thread with payette paste.

If I lay down a straight cast (30' line/5.5' leader/5' tippet) the leader will "catch" the water before the line or the tippet. Little surprised by that.

Re: Furled leader -- bad attitude about them

I'm also not loving furled leaders.

Finding them too sticky on the water and therefore harder to mend. On a straight cast across current the leader moves well before line or tippet.
