Re: Early run-off July fishing

Runoff will be over by the beginning of July.

Late July may be tough in the afternoons, depending on heat, though usually August is the really painful time in the park.

A lot of lower-elevation...

Re: Madison River Questions

Blue Ribbon was calling for readers of their newsletter to comment against the Madison R rule change last season.

Re: Madison River Questions

Ask any fly shop or guide what they think about the fishing immediately below Quake and you will hear expletives. Don't fish there until late May. If you do, you are pounding spawners. It is a VERY...

Re: Paradise Valley Mid-June

Actually snowpack has dropped over 10 points since the beginning of April and the weather forecast suggests it'll keep right on going after a short blip this weekend. I expect the steeper/more...

Re: Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Road Trip: Gearing Up

If I had ten bucks for every time a client showed up with no rod heavier than a five-weight after reading that's all they needed (as is suggested by the linked article) and was undergunned, I could...

Re: May trip in Montana

The Park doesn't open until May 28 this year. The Madison except below Ennis Dam will be too high. The Yellowstone will be too high. In fact, just about everything freestone will be near peak runoff....

Re: Yellowstone Pattern Suggestions

Only the section of the Yellowstone upstream of the falls opens July 15. The rest opens with the general season opener and it's usually the best big water option across the northern end of the park...

Re: Bighorn mid July vs. Missouri end of June

Missouri, no question. Should be PMD and caddis out already and there is a TON more water around there. You can always go fish the Dearborn or Lil Prickly Pear on foot if you get sick of crowds, or...

Re: Upper Soda Butte Creek Trout to be Eradicated

This project is a stupid waste of money. Ask anybody who fishes the water in question and most have never so much as seen a brook trout, only thousands of 99.5% (yes, 99.5) pure cutthroats....

Re: Upper Soda Butte Creek Trout to be Eradicated

Key details from the Montana FWP EIS:

--33 miles of stream involved
--Yellowstone cutthroat genetics are 99.5% pure (.1% rainbow trout, .4% westslope cutthroat) and there is a fish barrier in...

Upper Soda Butte Creek Trout to be Eradicated

Are you familiar with upper Soda Butte Creek?

If so, you may want to make your voices heard regarding the current plans by the Montana FWP department and Yellowstone Park's fisheries managers to...

Re: Planning a YNP Trip - Seeking Advice

Bear in mind that Cliff Lake is a solid 45 minutes (at least) from the west gate of the park. If you're looking for anything even remotely centrally located, that ain't it. You will be limited to the...

Re: Pro deals for guides?

I know it goes against the terms of all pro deal agreements to disclose the deal or discuss it publicly and that I can have my deals revoked if I'm caught discussing them. Maybe you should contact...

Re: Yellowstone National Park (1st week of july, 2014)

Stenacron:

You are the one that needs to read the regs. The Yellowstone River above the falls is the only really important piece of water that opens July 15. Everything else holding cutthroats...

Re: "SW" Montana=125% snow pack!

Most drainages are now way over 125%. The Yellowstone Basin is at 148%, one of the heaviest on record. We don't anticipate the Yellowstone will become fishable before July 15 and it might be closer...

Re: Wanted: your reports and photos of Slough Creek - Yellowstone

The backcountry sites are probably mostly gone already.

There's no way you'll get into the campground at noon. You are better off staying at Tower Falls Campground if you want to be more central...

Re: Fly guide

You should have started looking much sooner. We like to have our guide corps set no later than the end of February and prefer to start the hiring process around Christmas. Most other shops and...

Re: Yellowstone - Madison and Gibbon

It is extremely unlikely the Madison and Gibbon will be fishable on or near the opener this year. Years with average snowpack they are not ready at that point and given our high and rapidly...

Re: Looking to go to Montana

You said you're looking for a lake with trout and warm water fish. Not many have both. Also bear in mind that ice-out ranges from sometime in April to sometime in May depending on where we're talking...

Re: Trip to Livingston

This is definitely a bad idea. I have never seen anyone float/fish the Yellowstone in anything less than a Class III-rated pontoon and only even see canoes in a couple short sections. In mid-July the...

Re: Guide Positions in MT or CO?

You really, really don't want to work for anybody who is hiring right now. They are either terminally lazy about their business or are awful to work for and everybody they hired over the winter has...

Re: Bozeman, MT help.

The Gallatin ain't gonna work. It's not blown as bad as the Yellowstone yet, but it's heading that way and 70+ degree temps aren't going to help.

The Paradise Valley spring creeks will be your...

Re: Lodging & Guide at Henry's Fork & Firehole River area?

Just for the record, there is no way that the Firehole will be fishable in July this year. We're looking at around and 85% of normal snowpack and I expect the Firehole to start getting streaky...

Re: Montana in August

Mid-August is almost certainly going to require more sneakiness and flexibility than 2008-2011. Snowpack is down considerably from those years and the first surge of runoff has already happened. I...

Re: Planning 1st Yellowstone Trek

West Yellowstone is more than two hours from Silver Gate, so planning to use a shop there as your main info source is a mistake. There is a shop in Cooke City though I don't know if they have a...
