All my short rods are vintage fiberglass

there's a 6'6" Wright&McGill
a 6'6" Garcia Conolon
and a 7' Fenwick

Fiberglass rods excel in tight places as they load with only a short amount of...

Re: Anyone else fish for minnows

On hot summer days I like to wade wet in the local river and fish for juvenile smallmouth
They're very aggressive even at high noon on the hottest days and that's just about the time that you'd...

Re: 8wt set up or New tying vise???

If you practice a little restraint, tying your own flies can be much cheaper than buying
You don't need to buy every new product that comes along
You don't need every shade of chicken feathers...

Re: 8wt set up or New tying vise???

If you want to develop your skills as a fly fisher, then you need to tie your own flies
People that don't are at a definite disadvantage.

(you'll also need a 8wt someday too ;))

Re: Home Depot?

How about a nice smoker ?

(I'd probably get a new lawnmower myself,as I probably spend as much time working on my 25 year old machine as I do mowing .)

Re: Now that you have your bamboo and/or glass...

I have a fiberglass Orvis Golden Eagle. 9' for an 8wt, that I'll use on occasion
It's a heavy rod, 7.5 oz., but when you want to cast big air resistant bugs with an open loop, it has no equal. ...

Re: Best color for the keys on merkins

I tie my merkins to "match the hatch" and around here that's lady crabs.
Flats fishing here in the northeast has gone down the crapper in the last 8 or 10 years so these scruffy looking things have...

Re: In need of help

While the black nose dace can make for a perfectly good generic bucktail, it's become a "match the hatch" streamer for me.
Black nose dace live only in the cleanest, coldest water. The same streams...

Re: Maintaining a journal

I use a calender
There's not much space, just enough to jot down the destination, weather, and prominent hatch.
That's enough for me.

It's a little on the heavy side but it's fun to cast.
Last year I got caught fishing it...
