Re: Grayling news.

I've caught a couple of grayling out of the Madison in the past.

I caught a few out of the Gallatin back when they tried to reintroduce them.
I hope it works but it seems doubtful.

The...

Re: Magic river ?

It's not the Beav.
It's not that other thing I think a couple of you might be thinking it is.
I don't think it's in Montana.

Re: Yellowstone Fishing Guides

Parks or Blue Ribbon would have been my first choices as well.

Re: Kelly Galloup Article.

Thanks for the props Dean.
I was trying to organize my thoughts without degenerating into full on rant mode.

I'd like to make it clear that I have nothing against Kelly. Not that it matters what...

Re: '14 midwest trip

It really is a beautiful place.

Late July, especially this year, you should still run into some mayfly hatches.
Make sure you have some spinner patterns that will match the mayflies that have...

Re: Kelly Galloup Article.

Kelly is a great self promoter and if being somebody in fly fishing is the goal then he has achieved it.

However...
fishing for big trout doesn't need more exposure. Big trout aren't bass, there...

Re: Wyoming Spring Fishin'

Nice fish.
S.W. Montana's been fishing well also of late.

It's snowing like crazy right now and has been most of the day. It must be dumping in the mountains.
It's supposed to stay relatively...

Re: Nobody here fishes unless it's summer?

Yeah, it's not a competition.
Fish are cool and fun to photograph regardless of size. Sometimes the smallest ones are the prettiest.

I live in the middle of trout Mecca and fish a lot, almost...

Re: Nobody here fishes unless it's summer?

I've been out quite a bit.

Here's a 25" brown I pulled out of the Jelly Belly a couple days a go on the two hander. I was alone so I just took a quick head shot and let him go.
Quite the schnoz...

Re: Soon I'll Go From This................

Looks like fun work to me.
I saw your pictures on S.P.

I wish I had a cabin way up a river in Alaska like that.
I would really enjoy the work involved to make that happen. It would really give...

Re: MT Missouri River

I think he's talking about the Gates.
If he is then you can run motors up there. It's somewhat of a boat show when the fish are moving in to spawn which is what's going on right now. It's one of...

Re: MT Missouri River

There's a trail that runs from the east side of the dam to Beaver Creek.
You can park at the dam or drive around down to Beaver Creek.

You don't need a boat.
I've never seen a drift boat up...

Re: '14 midwest trip

It's a really easy hike. Relatively flat.
The trail is actually a wagon track they use to supply the ranch just outside the park.

Re: '14 midwest trip

Just a side note.
You really need to be off the beaten path if you are looking for solitude in the park. The best fishing is typically a destination for a good deal of packing trips in the park....

Re: How many fish will I loose when......

Most likely or they were just trying to promote barbless. The Gallatin outside the park isn't barbless unless there's been a regulation change that I haven't heard about, which would be a total...

Re: How many fish will I loose when......

I don't doubt it.
As I tied bigger and bigger buggers, 4s to 2s to 1s, I noticed a significant change in how many fish got off due to hook leverage. I'm sure barbless would get levered out even...

Re: '14 midwest trip

Things are shaping up to be really big snow packs this year.
You really need to take that into account as to when you, and anyone else planning a trip, come out here this year.
Unless we have a...

Re: How many fish will I loose when......

I honestly can't think of any streams in Montana (that are public) that are barbless. There very well may be some, I just don't know about them.
None of the popular rivers in southwest Montana are...

Re: You can skip the idea of fly fishing on the Rogue for another week or so ...

The girlfriend and I arrived in Bandon yesterday. She's on spring break (teaches at Montana State).

We drove down along the Umpqua, it was huge. I looked at the flows last night and it had come up...

Re: MOW tip question

You could buy some T material and make your own tips.

Maybe buy some T-11 and cut it to length of your rod (a good all around starting point) and then cut back further as needed.

I haven't used...
