Re: First carp of 2014 for me

I played with an Orvis Suoerfine glass 5 wt today...pretty fun on these small pond carp! They really bent that rod over and it was near impossible to turn a hot fish. I am not going to rush to use...

Re: Korean carp?

Rule #1, know your forage. Carp are masters of finding the most efficient way to get calories...so you need to figure out what they are eating as their primary forage. They will often eat other...

Re: First carp of 2014 for me

to the best of my knowledge nick, it is a recessive gene, sort of like blue eyes. So essentially, you need the milt from a mirror to match up with the eggs from a mirror to produce another mirror. ...

Re: First carp of 2014 for me

There are really only three variants when it comes to scale patterns. Fully scaled, mirrors, and leathers. Occasionally you will get a fully scaled fish that has some strange scale patterns, we...

Re: First carp of 2014 for me

I have fished lake mi 4 times, but never beaver island. It is really different than my home waters. The fish eat gobies and act more like smallmouth bass, they often chase and just crush big 2-3...

Re: The Addiction Continues

Nice! I used to indicator fish for carp in small rivers in MN. Don't have the right situation out here but a good dead drift was deadly. Clean looking fish!

Re: First carp of 2014 for me

Seeing the fish is crucial out here. In ten years of chasing them on the big C I have only "felt" 3 takes. You just aren't going to catch them blind because they won't chase a fly. You have to spot...

First carp of 2014 for me

It has been a long, cold winter! We finally got a day of sun, and despite the water likely being way too cold, I checked out an area that usually gets the first couple of carp of the season to show....

Re: Carp Flies for a Starter

Carp are tricky in that there is no "right" fly for all carp, but there probably is a "right" fly for your carp. Rule number one is to know your forage. Figure out exactly what the carp you are...

Re: carp fly hooks

I swear by the gapers. Huge hook gap, stout, but you can still buy them really small (a size 8 is not a big hook by the way..they are super short). I basically only tie on size 6 or 8 gapers unless...

Re: carp fly hooks

I use gamakatsu for big lake mi stuff, and carp pro gapers in size 8 for most of my local Columbia river stuff.

Re: Give carp a try!

Part of the beauty of carp on the fly is that you can find them in so many places. One can fish a retention pond, a small river, a big river (my main stomping grounds) a drainage canal, or the...

Re: Summer carpin

Water temp has a lot to do with it. Out here it never gets too warm, so they actually fight really well in the summer months...when the water is cooler they don't fight nearly as well. Might be too...

Re: Summer carpin

jp, I use a 7 weight Orvis Helios 2 and a Cheeky Mojo 425 as my main set up. I fish the Orvis Hydros carp line as well (really love that line). Standard 1x tapered leader and tippet, and most of my...

Summer carpin

Certain things about summer carpin are perfect. Water levels, full sun, etc. but summer also brings the heat that gives the fish the mid day lull (I hate chasing sunning carp). In the summer, I...
