Re: Fly fishing as church...

I personally feel a lot closer to God while knee deep in a mountain stream than I do in church. I'm in constant dialogue with Him in both places.

Re: "Driftless" Region.......

Wisconsin has more water and more quality water than MN due to geography. However, it also has many more people thanks to its proximity to Chicago.

Minnesota has higher quality water on average,...

Re: Move MN to Great Lakes forum?

Maybe we should have a Driftless forum.

Re: Cool weather trout fishing

Up in the mountains on free stone streams, winter fishing can be tough. No springs mean water temps get down into the 30s/low 40s. This is compounded by low flows and usually bright and clear days....

Re: What's this?

Definitely a stonefly nymph. They live for years under rocks in fast moving water, then crawl up on shore to hatch. So don't use emergers. A bead-head hare's ear tied in appropriate colors is an...

Re: Big trout surrounded by little trout: what do you do?

This has been my experience as well. A small twitch of a large stimulator seems to spook small trout, but entice large trout. It think that it's simply because larger trout are more conditioned to...

Re: Winter Jacket Color

I agree with FISHN50. I've startled hunters (and poachers I suspect) before while flyfishing. I always wear visible colors, even out of hunting season.

That being said, I wouldn't get a blaze...

Re: Wyoming Fall Fishing--Trip Report

Mcnerney,

We all know you catch a lot of big trout. Can you post more pics of the scenery? :)

Re: How would you fish this?

If you don't mind me asking, how close are you to the NC border?

Also, if they're naive brook trout, they'll hit anything. Bring some bushy fast-sinking nymphs to get down deep if needed. Also...

Re: Brigadoon Creek

I am lucky to have found my own 'Brigadoon' creek early in my trout fishing career. I've even taken a couple friends and family there. But it's not special to them. I think I would be as lost at...

Re: Ebola in Northern Maine?

Did you know, based on total number of cases, that you're twice as likely to have married Rush Limbaugh than contracted Ebola in the United States?

Re: Is it worth the upgrade?

This may be controversial, but don't try to learn by yourself. Find someone to take you fishing and show you how.

I have taught people how to cast a fly rod in 20 minutes, given that they haven't...

Re: Interesting read on myths

Actually, I pulled a classic basic chemistry mistake and juxtaposed transmittance and absorbance in my head. Ignore what I posted. :P

Re: Interesting read on myths

I disagree, to an extent. The vast majority of biological UV reflecting materials absorb in the 220 -280 nm range. So, although there is a wide enough gap there in the absorbance range for slight...

Re: Interesting read on myths

I just want to chime in and say that wind resistance is primarily a function of cross-sectional area, not surface area. The math largely washes out the same since both cross-sectional area and...

Re: Nymphing for big trout?

Charles Brooks wrote a whole book on this subject, and it is excellent. I read it cover-to-cover when I was first learning to fly fish, and I still refer back to it occasionally.

Nymph Fishing...

Re: Trying to understand the UL craze.

Actually, with a 12wt, you can just jerk the fish out of the water pro-bass tournament style and snap a quick pick as it soars past your head.

Re: Trying to understand the UL craze.

First off, I agree with you that UL fly tackle isn't significantly worse for fish than normal tackle, given that the fisherman knows what she/he's doing. But a couple of the things you said rub me...

Re: Into the NC Mountains

Will do. Cherokee is too far for a day trip for me, though. I mostly fish the headwaters of the Wilson, Upper, Steele, Joe's, Laurel, etc. above Lenoir/Morganton. That's probably a bit closer to...

Into the NC Mountains

I finally had a day free to fish, and made the best of it. Sunday was overcast with highs around 55 up in the mountains. Perfect fishing weather. I headed up to one of my favorite streams up in...

Re: Move on or change up?

If the fish is actively feeding, I'll be there all day until I catch it. If the fish isn't actively feeding, then I'll move on quickly.
