Re: My built in fire alarms are chuping. WHY??

How old are they? The sensors eventually wear out and the units need to be replaced, not just the batteries. This happened to us about 10-15 years after we had them installed.

Re: Hardy Zenith 6 wt. or TFO BVK 7 wt.?

If it were me, I would get a Zenith in a 5 weight and then try to find any decent 8 weight on closeout for $100 or so for the steelhead. Like this one, for instance:
Temple Fork Outfitters Lefty...

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

Ah! I was looking at 2 minutes and 59 seconds. You don't see a 3-hour clip on YouTube every day.

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

At 2:59 something else is going on, not a fishing scene. Typo?

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

Yes! Foyle's War is the only time I've seen flyfishing as a background context actually done right. There's also an episode where he is drooling over an American officer's Leonard and he gives the...

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

Right. Who needs a Tenkara rod when there's Viagra? Just tie a line to the end and whip it around.

(Although I have to say, one of the lamest commercials in recent memory has to be the one with...

Re: Albright is going out of business

Take trout trekker's advice and buy an extra tip now if they still have them! You won't be able to get one once they've closed.

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

There was an episode of Downton Abbey where the aristocrats all bundled off to Scotland for some salmon fishing at the country manor. Once on the river, though, they could barely heave a fly the...

Re: Albright is going out of business

It's a shame, but this has been coming for a while now, what with their misleading pricing and warranty policies and poor service. It was a good company when Murphy was still running it, but I think...

Re: Cleaning a soiled cork grip.

I've cleaned a lot of cork grips. For light soil I use dish liquid and a sponge with warm water. For heavier soil I use a steel-wool dish scrubbing pad like SOS. Both are gentle enough not to harm...

Re: Are rodmakers changing their product lines a little too often?

Well, consider how Orvis described the Helios 2 when it discontinued the original Helios:

"The Helios 2 is a featherlight war club that defies the laws of physics and has the backbone of an...

Re: Are rodmakers changing their product lines a little too often?

Another point that I learned this past summer (from a senior Orvis exec who was in fish camp the same week that I was) is that the aerospace industry represents most of the demand for the...

Re: December Caption Competition-Sponsored by Allen Fly Fishing

"For the life of me I can't understand why so many people want a Sage One this Christmas. This thing's a broomstick. They ought to be asking me for an Allen Volant!"

Re: Any made in the US companies match Orvis' warranty??

I would guess that's probably exactly why my new friend at Orvis said the warranty policy doesn't really cost the company that much.

Re: Any made in the US companies match Orvis' warranty??

On lifetime versus 25 years for a warranty term: I don't see a meaningful difference. If you haven't broken a rod in the first five years, chances are you're not going to. And in the unlikely...

Re: Any made in the US companies match Orvis' warranty??

As long as they have the mandrels AND the same raw material is still available AND they are willing to do custom work.

I have heard that Orvis will take custom orders for discontinued models, so...

Re: Fly Tying kits Question

A lot of beginners' kits have poor quality or poorly chosen materials that aren't very useful. Look for kits that have good tools and materials selected to tie a few specific patterns, with tying...
