They declined........not even a hat!

Re: The Keystone XL Pipeline's Cousin... Line 61

Except that very little, if any of the oil that we risk moving across this country, from Canada, will be used here.....So tell me again why?

Re: St Croix Switch rods any one here ever cast one?

Commonly, I see two approaches to this switch rod thing.
The empirical method, and the "just go cast it school".
I come from the latter.....no weighing pennies,or measuring the head......
Don't...

Silver, I think that was more than I needed too.......
I hadn't even had my coffee....
That fish was probably dead from the fight....heart attack.
Much prefer the athletic type myself.

Re: Ideal Switch Rod for Trout

Totally agree, I tended to go long before the longer sticks....
It's just easier now.

Re: Ideal Switch Rod for Trout

I find I agree with every thing 9iron said....
Except that a short single hand with double-haul and spey will do everything a switch does.....
The whole point for me wasn't casting range, but was...

I heard someone say if it ain't broke don't fix it.....
The two-hander thing caught me by surprise...

Wasn't broken exactly....but better for...

Re: St Croix Switch rods any one here ever cast one?

I wouldn't say line has much to do with fish fighting power....
Just casting.
The 8wt rod has more backbone than a 7wt.
And that's what puts pressure on them.
So put the 8wt line on the 7wt and...

Re: St Croix Switch rods any one here ever cast one?

I'm not familiar with the Orvis line.
It is accepted "out here" to up-line.
If I'm swinging....a Skagit line, only one..
Indicator style maybe two. For turn over...
My favorite is a Rio...

Re: St Croix Switch rods any one here ever cast one?

I understand the situation.....
Seems we need a store to send out casting test packs....3 rods bundled to cast.
Pick one and send back the rest.
The dually will probably fill your needs......

Re: St Croix Switch rods any one here ever cast one?

Sounds like a cast - off to me.....down to two contenders....
Not to sound critical..
My experience leads me to comment that although, as Ard has stated, and I agree....You can get used to...

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

Since I can't see your cast I have to accept your appraisal.
My experience as a guide is the farther we try to cast, the worse our mechanics...
Shoulder/ wrist issues are symptomatic of other...

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

The next step, is to take that inherently inaccurate rod and cast until, it becomes accurate.....
Much like learning to use a short rod to cast a mile....

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

I've got it!
Just cut a piece of pvc pipe 3 feet long.
Slide it over the bottom of your 5wt and then duct tape the reel onto it.
Probably cost a couple bucks.........save $300-400.....at least....

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

I'd have to say yes, a stiffer tipflex does reduce some of the fall-off of accuracy.
But the longer rod path and extra flex along length will high-light any casting errors as well.
If it's too...

Which I'm to much a gentle man to tell. (Unless you come fish of course....)

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

The 5wt is an all around rod.....will work OK on smaller water and can be pushed to fish far too. Fits most trout as well.
so if you only have one rod.....
I fish bigger trout and bigger...

Re: Is there a reason for a longer rod?

The thought "I own the river" crosses my mind frequently since I started fishing an 11 ft stick.
It's a longer slightly slower set, so you have to be more ready.
I call it "gunfighter" fast....
