Re: Help with Kayak Fly Rod for Bluegills

I can attest the Eagle Claw will also survive an unscheduled roll-over in shallow water, too. :o

Re: catfish on the fly-advice

No experience on creeks or rivers, but have caught a few in lakes & ponds.
Love the fight they put up! No flashy jumps, but they can pull like a bulldozer and never give up! :D

Re: Set-Up For Bluegills

I use a 2wt or 3wt.
Got a 6' 3wt bamboo rod last spring and it's been fun so far.

Re: Take care with Fishwest !!

I also had a problem with FishWest this past week.
Ordered a reel through eBay and they notified me at closing time on Friday that the reel was on backorder, and when (and if) they did get the reel...

Re: 1st Gill of the season

Good looking 'gill!

It can take a lot of effort to catch them this time of year, but it sure beats setting at home!

The PT nymph is often a good choice when they're deep and moving slow.

Re: TFO Lefty Kreh Professional or Redington Classic Trout?

The CT is a much slower action.
I found it to be more like glass or cane in flex/action when I tried it.

I use a TFO Pro and like it much better.

Re: 2wt line on a 3wt rod?

As said depending on your casting stroke and the rod action it is possible.
I have a 3wt glass rod (Lamiglas blank) that does best with a dt2f and I can also cast a wf3f or a wf1f on that rod.

Re: My luck is still rolling:)

That is a very nice bass!
Since the owner wanted it removed you did the right thing.
I used to fish a private pond where the owner had a strict C&R policy. He tried to kill off vegetation one...

Re: 'Ol McGinty

I'd love to see a step-by-step tutorial for tying that fly as it's shown there!
Looks a bit better than my chenille McGinty.

BTW- I ALWAYS keep a few McGinty flies in my 'gill assortment. I've...

I like the idea of two thread colors on the Clousers.

Re: New with warranty card?

Only time I ever needed a warranty was on a new rod purchased on an auction site. The seller was an authorized dealer and the rod in fact shipped from the company's (Greys) US distribution center....

Re: Is an 8 wt too much rod for smallmouth?

I usually limit the 6wt to size 8 or smaller, especially with a heavily weighted fly like a Clouser. If I'm going to use size 4 or larger Clousers (I seldom tie a size 6 so I skipped from 8 to 4)...

Re: reel sizing for us warmwater guys:)

I've found reel capacity can vary greatly from one manufacturer to the next, and even quite a bit between reel models. One rated 3/4 may hold plenty of line & backing for a 4wt and another...

Re: Is an 8 wt too much rod for smallmouth?

An 8wt would be a good starting point. I find my 6wt is limited in the size flies it will cast - especially if there's any wind to deal with. I'd say get the 8wt first and plan on adding a 6wt later....
