I can agree with both gents before me, although I would say for getting started on ponds with bass and probably some panfish an 8-9' 6wt outfit would do just fine. Plenty of rod for starting out...

+1 for the San Juan, it is good fishing all year long. Other tail waters in the area should still be fishing well also, Uncompahgre and Dolores come to mind. The temps don't appear to be climbing...
