Re: Sage X sweeps IFTD 2016 rod categories

Okay, so I conflated two related but distinct points in my original post that I should clear up here. One is brand/price, etc bias, thus all test casting for rating and review purposes should be done...

Re: Echo 3 for streamers?

Agreed with S&S.

I too have a 6wt and love it. I don't like streamer fishing, but will do it, and even have with a sink tip on that Echo 3. It's a great rod.

Re: Sage X sweeps IFTD 2016 rod categories

I know a little about the world of wine. And about human nature (that's my job, not a hobby). There's a reason that tasters with the highest integrity only taste blind, and not as part of industry...

Re: Sage One durability issues

Fishing with a friend (very experienced angler) in Montana a year ago he snapped a 5 wt on a hook set. I'm not sold on the durability of these light, thin walled blanks. But then, I don't know that...

Re: Sage VXP, is it a good streamer rod?

Slower than a TCX? Of course. That's an ultra-fast rod based on tournament casting. The VXP is a fine streamer rod.

Re: Simms dealers in DC area or lack of

This is very funny. I live in DC, and since Urban Angler closed the ORvis store is all there is. Direct from Simms is your best bet, but there is a luxury sporting goods retailer in Friendship...

Yeah, and this could be true too. I'm just making this up.

Re: For the rod techies

Okay, but over million? Yes. I know a little bit about running a company and hiring ten employees (a total guess based on nothing) for the new rod division is going to be about $700k. Plus space,...

Re: For the rod techies

"This "environmental" stuff became trite years ago."

I have no idea what this means, but because the last we need on this forum is anything resembling a political debate--if that's even where it...

Re: The X ...for Sage fans...

" It is a matter of "easier" vs. "ever-so-slightly better" for me when it comes to METHOD vs. ONE."

Ever-so-slightly is all? I say go easier. I'm a Bryce Harper fan. Make fishing FUN again!

Re: Some advice on equipment costs in Missoula, MT for an English tripper

Nearly all that could be said has been.

I'd buy waders, but if you're renting stop in to Grizzly Hackle in Missoula. They usually have pretty good rentals.

And as others have said, fishing...

Turks and Caicos map

Hello.

I'm going there tomorrow. Much of Provo is parks and preserves where one can't fish, but some time ago someone published a map (hand drawn I believe) of where one could fish, but now I...

How did the Abel rod perform? Sure would be fun to have one of those these days.

Orvis Ignitor

Went in for a bonefish line and the guy sold me on the Ignitor. Has anyone used it? Seems to have a short, heavy shooting head compared to a usual WF line. I assume it could load a fast/stiff...

Re: Charlton

As a flyfisher who likes nothing more than a day floating down the Bitteroot or Blackfoot, I completely understand your point about the earlier reels. But the modernist, minimalist, design geek in me...

Re: Charlton

Look at that thing! I know it's just my opinion, but the Mako is the most perfectly designed fly reel ever produced. Period.

I'm going to do some research on Jack--I bet he studied modern design...

Re: Anderson's 2016 5wt reel shootout soon to be released. Predictions??

Ah, this warms my heart. Guess what was on my 6 wt last time I was in Montana fishing the Stillwater (very underrated river) for little rainbows? Big Game No. 2 with the Super 6 large arbor spool. I...

Charlton

I might be stepping into something here, given how $50 nippers can raise hackles, but what the hell...

If you had some extra cash, would you buy a Charlton reel? They are on the market for between...

Re: George Anderson's 5wt. Reel Shootout...

This is completely true. I'm going to say something like, "I'm fine with everything in these ratings, but I can't accept that a Chinese made 3 Tand is really a better reel than an Abel, and certainly...

Re: What is my next strategy?

Do not use a stomach pump. Do not.

Figure out what they are eating or don't. Catch fish or don't. But a stomach pump...I'll stop there.

Not why I was there but I checked out the new Made in the USA CFO reels. i own a few Abels and was very surprised at how light they are. I like my heavy Abels but as someone who likes a classic reel,...

Re: What type rod would you purchase?

There is no overlap between your 6 wt rod and an 8 wt.

That 6 weight is a fine large brown rod, but you'll want a 7 or 8 for steelhead (and going up in line weight is not the same).

Look for a...

Re: 6 wt fly reel advice

It's all personal preference for that use and at that price point. What about a Ross Animas? Made in the USA and affordable. I like it.

Re: Reel strategy

I'm no expert, but I say without hesitation or qualification: it depends. If you find a reel you really like, then some extra spools can make sense. And, first, balance is way overrated. Or, exact...
