Re: What's best for my z-axis 590?

I agree with you on the GPX. A beginner line is actually an apt description for me because as I've become a better caster I've come to really dislike it unless I'm throwing junk in close.

My...

Re: What's best for my z-axis 590?

I've fished GPX on my Z-Axis rods for years. It is the first line I bought for my Z's when I first bought the rod and I'm now on my second line for my 4 weight. My point is I've been fishing with...

Re: Last minute help needed. going to Chicago for the weekend,,,, where to fish?

There is no trout fishing unless you want to drive into Wisconsin or Michigan. Your best best depending on what part of Chicago you're in is to target smallies in a couple different rivers - not my...

Re: Abel vs. Hatch Debate

I thought it important to update/correct myself on the above BOLD statement I made. Simply because I fished my Super 4N all weekend and didn't have to fiddle with the drag knob at all while fishing...

Re: Sage Sp ,Xp, or RPL+?

I look at this a bit differently than some others I suppose. To me, the dry fly rod is the SP and the XP is better for nymphing. I own and fish a 589-5 SP and it is not the rod I reach for when I'm...

Re: FS - Abel Big Game 0 Reel

I have one of these. Such a sweet little reel. Yours is a. Excellent t specimen and a great saw tooth drag plate and older lettering on the drag knob to boot. Wonderful reel.

Re: Trout Fly Rod Arsenal

4 1/2 ft. 3 and 4 weights would be rods that I would personally add to that quiver.

Re: I'm gonna need a new name

Thanks. My wife flies the Bears flag. I fly the Black & Gold.

Cheers,
Mike.

I'm gonna need a new name

After almost 13 years living in Chicago, I'm moving to Denver. Chi Flyfisher (Chicago Flyfisherman) is going to have to be retired. My nickname from high school is ConMan, which was a screen name I...

Re: 6 weight rod feedback Scott Radian?

I am strongly considering the addition of a Scott Radian to my quiver. I recently wiggled one at a fly shop in Colorado two weekends ago. When I have $800 burning a hole in my pocket I am sure to...

Re: Best fighting fish?!

I recently caught some dandy smallies on the Kankakee River in Illinois with the nicest being about 19 inches. A helluva bend and fight on Sage ONE 6 and 7 weights. That said, while pound for pound...

Re: Orvis C.F.O.

Yep - what Jaybo said. I'd go with a II. I think you'll want it for balance and the I is so small that fly line coiling to me becomes a bit of an issue.

Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Sage ACCEL

Not to completely derail this thread, but that's damn funny. I just bought a new Sage rod, and I just tossed another pair of boxers into the trash threadbare. I had to ask my lovely bride to throw...

Simms StreamTread Sandal

Worn once in a drift boat. I didn't even wear them to/from the stream. They're 11 1/2, which I figured would fit me well without socks, since I wear a size 12. I was wrong. They're just on the...

Re: Abel's forthcoming Sealed Drag Reel

I've professed my love of all things Abel here on more than one occasion. It's the only hobby I have and it's where my disposable income goes. I don't ski, have high performance cycling equipment,...

Re: Abel Super 6

If it were me, I'd get a standard arbor spool for your Super 6 and you have a fine bonefish reel there. I'm not confident you'd be ok backing wise using an 8 weight line on the large arbor spool. ...

Re: From Salmon River NY to Pere Marquette MI

IMO fishing for Steelhead on the PM is one of the best experiences you can have on the Great Lakes tribs. Sure there are drift boats that can hit or cover the major holes but there is a ton of water...

Re: Abel vs. Hatch Debate

Wow. Can't say I blame you there. I would have a sour taste in my mouth with those guys and, candidly, I'd have canceled it and told them to shove it where the sun don't shine at this point. ...

Re: How long does it take from your home to the water?

It takes me 4 1/2 hours to get to my "home" waters. More if I leave on a Friday afternoon after work. It get's tiresome, and I don't make day trips any longer so I usually make it at least an...

Re: Sage Rod Chart Begs the debate - which is best?

I don't own them all nor I have I fished them all, but for sake of credentials, I do own and fish the following lines:

LL
SP
SLT
XP
Z-Axis
VXP
ZXL
ONE

Re: The Driftless gang has been pretty quiet, anybody having any success?

The absolute worst part about Driftless fishing. They're brutal. Head net, Buff, whatever it takes... they crawl on your glasses, in your ears, up your nose. It's torture! Buggins spray does...

Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison - what an S.0.B.

Outstanding. I'm not in near good enough shape and I'm no longer crazy enough to do that hike. 15-20 years ago maybe.

I've fished with Rich a couple times in the Midwest. I need to ask him...

Re: The Shimano Beancounters Just Wrecked Loomis

Yep - that's the rub. It's part of the reason they cost $800. I'm not buying another NRX - and it's a shame, because I love my Loomis rods - NRX 9 weight and Native Run 8 weight.

---------- Post...

Re: The Driftless gang has been pretty quiet, anybody having any success?

Have heard fishing has been fantastic. I've fished Wisconsin this year less than I have in years for a number of reasons - such a bummer for me. Get out there if you can as water temps this year...
