Re: When is fishing fishing?

This is a well reasoned argument.

I think that there's a reverse humaniac thought process that goes on with C&R fly anglers who believe they are the pinnacle of conservationists and their methods...

Re: Eat that fish, or release it?

wolfglen, call this a hunch, but I'm beginning to think you have issues with the government.

Just to clarify, as this was a recently discussed topic, a "blood sport" more properly refers to a...

Re: Adding studs/cleats to felt?

A cobbler has different skills from a cordwainer, so not sure they could handle a start to finish shoe.

Weinbrenner might be interested in a limited run if we can get enough orders. I would buy...

Re: Adding studs/cleats to felt?

I wonder how difficult it would be to get Weinbrenner to remake the Borger stacked heel boots. They were great boots.

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

Last year the BK was a disaster. Down to what, 50cfs? And yet guys were still fishing in 70 degree water.

I don't fish it any longer - saving my time for a few tailwaters and some hidden wild...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

ABSTRACT—This study assesses the mortality impacts of electrofishing at the population scale based on levels of sampling by Idaho Department Fish and Game (IDFG) and non-IDFG projects during the 1995...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

Why? I eat fish, fowl and meat, I hunt, and have fought PETA/HSUS over dogs for years.

If I'm thinking about catching and killing up to my legal limit and no longer harassing or stressing fish for...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

It's all perspective, I guess. To a dentist the world is filled with rotting teeth.

Seems that the op ed was successful in that it got people invested in the subject to talk. That was probably the...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

You seem to have an issue with science and scientists or at the very least believe that your anecdotal experience outweighs scientific study. There's really no response to that.

Yes, it is ideal...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

Obie brings a gun to a knife fight.

Haven't read all, but some interesting studies. The one on Bonefish was pretty eye opening.

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

There are things he says that are contradictory, awkwardly phrased and outright exaggerated, but to say that he's vying to be the head of PETA is a bit of a stretch.

As this thread proves,...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

I'm really not sure what you're arguing.

I'm not saying the river program is good or bad - actually, it does seem worthwhile - but was simply wondering how they deal with the effluent load.

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

Obie - can you post or send me some of these studies? My limited research put C&R at about a 12% mortality.

Where did that Montana study come from? 40-70%?

Biologists are also no less...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

Interesting that they litter fish carcasses throughout the system. I wonder what effect the effluents have on the surrounding area from those rearing pens.

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

I think you get hung up on the word "preservation". Pulling down a dam and letting a river take it's original course seem to fall under preservation as easily as it does rehabilitation. If anything...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

I think one can be for preservation, conservation and rehabilitation without too much hair pulling.

I don't understand the desire to fish for tank raised meat when it's a lot easier and cheaper to...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

So much drama over a simple op ed.

The cat is out of the bag with regards to non native introduction. You'll never be able to remove those fish.

As to hatchery trout, it seems ridiculous to...

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

I pretty much agree with the author. I won't fish for stocked fish or on stocked rivers if I can.

It seems ridiculous to dump idiot fsh into a river system that may or may not support them and...

Re: A Life Saver

I use it to hike to the water and hike out.

While fishing, the wooden staff floats behind me. Occasionally it gets in the way, but I can get it into my hand faster than a folding one.

At camp...

Re: A Life Saver

I was travelling through NorCal a few weeks ago and had the opportunity to fish the Pit River. The Pit is notorious for destroying anglers, so I needed a staff as I didn't bring one.

Stopped off...

Re: Father/Son(s) Trip

Just to throw something different into the mix, if you're stuck on May, I might look at the Eastern Sierras, based around Mammoth Lakes and Hot Creek.

This is high desert with the Sierras as a...

Re: I love PETA

Yes, because if history has taught us anything it's that ignoring radicals makes them fade away.

PETA has an annual budget of 37m. HSUS is well over 100m. They're not going anywhere.

Re: I love PETA

PETA and the HSUS have the same agenda, but the HSUS is more duplicitous about it. For those who don't know, the HSUS is an animal rights org masquerading as an animal welfare org and contrary to...

Re: Shave Clubs?

They're called "safety razors" for a reason. It takes about three attempts to master it.
