Re: Beginner's fly rod quiver advice

The 5WT will certainly work but I agree with your concerns. Takes some of the fun out of panfishing, and not ideal for throwing bass sized flies.

Re: 'Nother Birthday !

Thanks Siege. Weather cancelled my fishing plans today so I rescheduled my birthday for tomorrow. :)

Fishing with Craigthor for the first time since he moved. He set up a camp on my favorite...

Re: Need some new wading boots, and a repair question

I received my G3s last week and will fish them tomorrow for the first time. The uppers are very substantial and with cleats I think they will be great on freestones where I rarely fish. No doubt...

Re: Fly gear that should cost double or more?

I agree the CT rod is underpriced. It's not worth double retail IMO but I'm not sure anyone has paid retail anytime lately. Also agree Okuma reels are a good value.

I believe LL Bean sells a...

Re: Need some new wading boots, and a repair question

You are so right about trying on shoes before you buy. I have narrow feet with a high arch so shoe size is always a crapshoot for me. Unfortunately I live 100s of miles from anywhere I could try on...

Re: Budget bass outfit

Did someone on this thread do that? For the most part I think this forum is pretty good about recommending affordable gear to noobs on a budget. Especially when they specifically mention the...

Re: What the heck is it?

I agree until the creek is froze over for a couple months. Then it starts looking borderline exciting. :)

Re: Looking for a good starter kit...

There are a lot of guys on this forum who have tied on inexpensive vises for decades. As long as it holds the hook still, experience and skill trumps the equipment used.

Re: Budget bass outfit

Cabela's outfits are a decent enough deal, but on a low end combo the line won't be impressive if you intend to throw typical big bugs that bass like. I bought a Three Forks combo for my daughter...

Re: Need some new wading boots, and a repair question

Hi Ard,

I knew you were wearing Simms but I had no idea which model. The repair advice makes sense, I just need somebody to chime in with something that will stick for a half dozen trips or so. ...

Need some new wading boots, and a repair question

Wife is going to buy me some new wading boots for my birthday, and I am looking at these.

It doesn't have to be expensive to start, but that's how it ends :)

Re: Thinking about a sled for winter.

Some of the old sleds were a bit maintenance intensive. I think I would spend some time on an appropriate forum before I chose a model and made a purchase. Sounds fun though. My neighbors had a...

Re: Marijuana Could Wipe out Salmon…

I did read it David and it's unfortunate. Midwestern farmers did incredible damage to wildlife and our watersheds back in the day. I'm not a big government guy but I'd hate to think what we'd have...

Re: Marijuana Could Wipe out Salmon…

I believed that for a few decades myself. Check out the stats on what legal alcohol abuse is costing you if you want to see some scary numbers.

Anyway, that's off the thread topic. Blaming MJ...

Re: Marijuana Could Wipe out Salmon

The difference is corn and soybeans are legal, and the chemicals used to grow them are also heavily regulated. The fact MJ is still illegal is most of the problem, but you already know that. I...

Re: Clear small stream tips and advice

That is big water around here too. Luckily for me the Iowa spring floods blow all the big trees off the banks every year (not really, it makes a mess). I can't imagine learning to fly fish in that...

Re: 2nd Steelhead 8wt Rod Compliment/Backup

Yes Cab the 9WT Imperial surprised me. I just knew there was no way I could possibly endure casting an 8WT 12 hour days for days on end. I am in my 50's and suffer a little joint pain frequently. ...

Re: 2nd Steelhead 8wt Rod Compliment/Backup

You might consider a St Croix Imperial 8FT 9WT. I have caught exactly one Salmon on mine. I used it for about 50 hours in Alaska but mostly for larger rainbow fishing. Ard cast it some and said it...

Re: Looking for a good starter kit...

$200 isn't enough to get started without cutting some corners but don't let that discourage you from the hobby. There are a lot of used "kits" on the auction site. In some cases they have some...

Re: first fish on a fly

First fish on a fly is a big confidence booster. At first the fly can seem like a handicap but in most water conditions it truly isn't.

Re: How long does it take a trout to start feeding again after feeling the hook?

Pike will definitely bite again very soon. I have a pretty cool pic of a pike with two large spinners hanging out both sides of his face. My cousin probably can't live long enough to not hear that...

Re: Into the heart of the Driftless and beyond... Photo's (pic heavy)

Great PICs and report. Finally had my first fall day out on the Driftless this week and it was a pretty good one. Hard to not enjoy the day when the fall color starts.

And yes New Glarus...
