Re: 2015 5-weight Fly Reel Shootout & Review

Interesting data but in my opinion the choice of a 5wt reel is about 99% personal preference and what strikes your fancy. I personally like the feel and looks of a high quality, well machined reel. ...

Re: New Flats Fly Lines

I just spooled a new Airflo Tropical Punch WF9F line on my Hatch Finatic 7+. The reel was loaded with Hatch backing to spec for WF9 lines on my mid arbor spool. I haven't had a chance to test cast...

Re: Fly rod brand of choice: Bamboo rods

I've had several custom built cane rods from several builders and each did a wonderful job. My experience with bamboo rods is that each rod is unique. Even the same taper from the same builder will...

Re: Sage ESN reel advice?

I bought a Scott Radian 10' 4wt a few weeks ago that I have also been going through various reels trying to get the balance point on the cork. Although Scott doesn't list the weight, it weighs 2.75...

Re: Orvis CFO III by Hardy

Maybe I've been lucky but I've had several screwbacks over the years and I've never had a problem with the spindle loosening on any of them. That's not to say, however, it hasn't happened with other...

Re: Orvis CFO III by Hardy

I would agree that the reel was probably bought purely as a collectible with no intent to ever mount it on a rod and is definitely on the high end of what it could be expected to sell for.

While...

Re: Correct Way to Pack a Rod in its Tube?

The 490-4 Sage One I had was the most difficult rod I've ever owned to put in the tube. How much would it have cost Sage to make the tube another 1/4" wider?

Very Good tip by SnS to cup your hand...

Re: Orvis CFO III by Hardy

Very nice! I agree with the other posters that the reel appears to be in excellent shape. I wouldn't even think about painting it.

If you want to have Orvis service it, you ship them the reel...

Re: Predicting time of a hatch

Not that it helps so much with the exact timing and strength of hatch on a particular day but I simply follow what's happening with the vegetation in the area. I know in my area the Hendrickson's...

Thanks for the heads up but they don't have them in a 4wt. I did buy a 3wt deeply discounted from them a few weeks ago.

Re: Waiting a life time for a rod of a life time.

I've had a few custom bamboo rods made but 5 years is a long time. I think my longest wait was about 2 years. Mike Clark makes wonderful rods that are made to fish. Go for it if you really want...

Re: Carp ??

I know there is no rational reason for it but I have zero interest in catching carp. Call it prejudice from my years growing up in the 50's. They may be called freshwater bonefish these days by some...

Re: Orvis CFO III by Hardy

I agree with the comments above about the check primarily being to prevent spool overrun. I also agree with not painting the reel but its your reel. If you feel you will like it more painted then...

Re: Help me with wrap color for my bamboo rod

If the cane is blond, I'd vote for burgundy or red tipped black. The tan tipped black looks nice as well. I've had four custom cane rods built for me and went with an understated look on each but...

Re: If the Sage One 5 wt is so great .... ??

I've never tried the 9' 5wt One but about a year ago or so I got a 9' 4wt Sage One in a trade. It was a beautiful rod and felt very light in my hand. It was amazing in how it could cast out to 70'...

Re: Thoughts on the Radian #5

I think Glacierjohn did a good job in describing the differences. For me, both rods are very smooth casting but the Radian is faster than the SLT and is more of a "tip flex". In my hand my SLT was...
