Re: Dream Fly Fishing Trip for Father/Son

Just a thought...finding good fishing plus at least a bit of near solitude in Yellowstone Park absolutely requires hiking or horseback riding. As much as I love Yellowstone...as a wildlife artist...

Re: So you caught a sucker/fallfish what do you do?

I have a deep aversion to killing any fish that is native to the water you caught it from, unless you're going to eat it. Somebody above said that they'd hate to see how many drum there would be if...

Re: airline travel/carryon/personal item??

I think the pre-check is somewhat random, but you're more likely to get it if you fly frequently. If you fly much at all, however, you might want to get on the permanent pre-check list. You do it...

Re: airline travel/carryon/personal item??

A lot depends upon the particular plane you're flying on. For instance, a trip from St. Louis to Bozeman MT usually involves either a smaller plane from STL to Minneapolis and a bigger one to...

Re: How can you tell that your nymphs are reaching bottom

Unlike cab, I like Thingamabobbers. I usually add a little more weight than I think is necessary...in fact, in fishing the kind of fairly fast-moving water that I'm often nymphing on rivers like the...

Re: Cushy Scenic Float Trip Wanted

Yeah, depending upon the snowpack and weather, first week in July could still see high water on some streams, which makes choosing one stream a long way ahead of time a bit of a gamble. I'd make...

Re: where are the most famous place to fly fish?

For me, "famous" destinations sometimes disappoint because of the crowds. The San Juan, Bighorn, Frying Pan, South Platte, White, Kenai...I've fished them all and all have fallen into that category....

Re: Grass Carp???

It appears to me that they are only susceptible to fly fishing under certain situations. They are mostly plant eaters, but if there is a huge supply of certain insects, like hoppers, they might...

Re: Snakes!

i think it's situational. I'll usually kill a copperhead that is in my yard, because that's approaching an unacceptable risk and that's MY territory. I'd never kill one otherwise, because when I'm...

Re: Tactics for blown out or muddy creeks?

True, it also means that light has to travel that 6 inches down into the water, bounce off the object, and then travel another 6 inches to reach the fish's eyes. So it isn't quite as simple as just...

Re: Tactics for blown out or muddy creeks?

Silver's advice in the other thread is about as good as it gets. I think a lot of anglers don't realize how much muddy water changes things, especially how it changes where fish lie and feed. Let's...

Re: Boats and other things that float

6 solo canoes--one each for my wife and I at our Montana place, a glass "fast" canoe for fishing rivers with lots of dead water to paddle through, my all purpose Ozark stream canoe, my OLD all...

I'm calling it a sharp-shinned, based upon a few things...

The eyes on Cooper's Hawks are placed well forward of the center of the head between beak and back of head, eyes on Sharpies are close to...

Re: The best caster

There are so many things that go into being a good angler...knowing the biology of the fish you're after, reading water, presenting flies, getting good drifts, etc. Casting is only one component. ...

Re: walleye in small pond?

No way they'd ever reproduce. Just about any kind of fish more or less native to the area could live for a while anyway in a pond like that. I have a pond a little less than an acre next to the...

Re: Snakes on my Brain

Cottonmouths are definitely a southern species, but you should tell some of the Missouri ones they don't like cold water. One almost surefire place to find a few cottonmouths is a certain side...

Re: Snakes on my Brain

I live in Missouri and Montana. In Missouri we have lots of copperheads, timber rattlers are fairly rare but present, cottonmouths are not common in the Ozark streams but some streams have pretty...

Re: Hawaii suggestions?

Another option, though not one I'd consider unless I was already going to be on the island, is that there is some pretty interesting stream fishing for smallmouth bass on the island of Kauai. And...

Re: Need Advice Planning a Trip to SW Montana

Re: Wader, tippet and Pack Question for an Idiot

I could see where it would make a difference in the sling pack whether you're right or left handed, but I wear mine so that it's around on my back until I need to get something out of it, so it...

Re: What is the worst fly fishing commercial or movie scene?

Yeah, absolutely nothing right in the Symbicort commercial. On top of everything else, that's a photographer's vest, not a fly fishing vest.

Re: Looking back.... How green were you?

I guess it depends upon when I'd consider my true start to fly fishing. As a kid, my dad had an old glass fly rod and told me about using it on the local smallmouth river, but I tried it a couple of...

Re: Tell me a little about trout fishing where u are ?

I live part of the year in Missouri and the rest in Montana on the Yellowstone. In Montana, wind is very often a big factor, but I still get by with a 4 wt. for dries, a 5 wt. for nymphs, and a 6...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Interesting...bass in many Ozark streams have a lot of yellow grub parasites. I wonder if it's the same thing that was in that trout. I don't know about the trout in the Ozarks...never cleaned one....

Re: Next stage in the cycle

I caught a bunch of fish on dry flies on the Yellowstone River today...65 degrees and mostly sunny most of the day. And I'll go back to Missouri shortly and start catching smallmouth again. Unless...
