Re: Sage Approach outfit or custom build?

Not seeing anything in your post about a custom build. You might get more responses about what reel to get on the setup you mentioned in a different section

Re: Epoxy help

Couple drops of denatured alcohol will do the same thing as the acetone, if you don't like acetone fumes. Either acetone or alcohol will thin the finish and increase the pot life. It will also...

Re: To do a complete strip and rebuild?

I've done it and hated every minute of the stripping process. To me the time required to strip a blank really isn't worth the effort. That being said, if there is a loving attachment to the rod by...

Re: Inexpensive lathe for wood turning and other questions

Do the lathes that have been mentioned have enough bed to do a 16" handle? My Sherline metal lathe has about 18" of usable bed length.

On that note, do you really need a 16" handle? The rule of...

Re: Number 7,004: Building my first fly rod with some friends! Need some help

Alignment dots: best way I have found is to dip the point of a toothpick is some model paint. and just touch the blank with the end. I bit of trial and error, but you can get a perfect dot to the...

Re: Filling male ends

They use to be called moisture barriers. Never really saw the need for them the inside of the blank is the same material as the outside, as in waterproof. I could see filling the tip if the butt...

Re: 14'3" CND Solstice build questions

It isn't a heavy seat but you might look at the Lemke Titanium seat. Saltwater can't touch it. If you are building a rod that you want to keep nice for its entire life you have to look at the...

Re: Build from a new guy

Welcome to the addiction. This forum section is all about having fun building rods. Being an "accomplished" builder has nothing to do with rods in this section. It's all about sharing the addiction...

Re: Where are all the new builds?

Williamhj,
I have a Blue Halo 3wt. I built for customers to try out. You are correct, they are slow with flex all the way thru the handle. At least the 3wt. Nice rod, especially for the price. I...

Re: New Build: Pete, ask and ye shall receive!

Oh man, do I feel better now. Thanks Andy for taking care of my withdrawals ;). I really like the matte finish the 000 steelwool gave the rod. Good looking stick.

I believe that you are dead on...

Re: Air under guide foot?

Oh ya, it's air, it happens and it stinks. I notice it in some of my stripping guides, espically with silk. Typically it is noticable on your larger guides, since there is a bigger tunnel (gap...

Re: choosing cane for first rod build

Sorry for the late reply. To answer your question as to what makes it bad cane for a bamboo rod? Two words "power fibers" or better yet.... lack of power fibers. Yes, you can build a rod that will...

Re: New to Fly rod actions and confused

Just because the Orvis guy can't cast a Bamboo rod doesn't mean all is lost. There is a line to suit any rod out there. Problem is.... you might have to wade thru some lines to get there. See if...

Re: So.... I'm a bit stuck in a rut.

Only personal opinion here, but a long rod in those conditions works great on pocket water fishing where casting isn't necessary. But in water like you showed a short Bamboo 6' 2 wt. or something...

Re: Applying finish on factory label?

I say its about 50/50 for folks who have had at least one issue with labels. Some swear by using CP on the edges. Me? I have never had a problem with the edges lifting. If they did, I would let...

Re: I need Help identifying an antique fly rod!

It sure looks like a wood rod. Even an octagon Bamboo rod would have flats on it. That blank looks to be too round to be Bamboo. I think its even older than the vast majority of Bamboo rods. Either...
