Use the fluff from the base of hackles on small flies for small flies. Minimize the waste.

Dropping flies into a bowl of water is a poor way to judge how/if a fly will float.

throwing a fly into an artificial environment (glass of water, bowl of water or even the bathtub) doesn't...

i dont carry a travel tying kit

i carry a large variety of flies (maybe too many) when i go on a fishing trip so i'd rather spend my time fishing than tying flies

A pair of $2.99 reading glasses sure does beat any type of vise magnifier attachment + the glasses don't get in the way when tying flies

that machinists ruler make a nice straight edge for cutting materials such as foam, electrostatic bags for bodies, zip lock bags for shell backs on scuds etc

I don't need 300 spools of thread to tie flies so I just keep spare spools in a zip lock bag and store that in a sterility plastic shoe box
