Re: Trouble with furled leaders

IMO the most valuable skill I've learned over the years is how to manage drag. All of the furled leaders I've used inthe past have been a hinderance to this skill.

Re: SW United States headed for a 'Mega Drought?'

+1 Agriculture policy and especially the beef industry is to blame. IMO no reason to raise beef west of Missouri.

Re: A terrible practice day

With the short heads you have to stay 'in the box' as Ed Ward calls it. After the sweep you go right into the forward stroke with no lifting and mostly bottom hand supplying the power. I actually...

Re: Single Hand Spey Cast help

Simon G's book is the ticket. Personally I feel that most folks can self teach the single hand spey casts (Two Hand casts maybe require an instructor for most)

Re: Faster rod or slower rod in this situation?

Seems like most folks who use glass rods agree that they work equally well with 2 or 3 different line weight classes. So you could expect a Fenwick 6wt like the 806 to cast well with a 6wt line, a...

Re: Faster rod or slower rod in this situation?

Glass 6wt. Delicacy and fish fighting feel of a grahite 4wt and payload capacity of a graphite 6wt. Vintage Fenwick 6wts go for $50-$80 on that evil auction site.

Re: Short rods for big flies?

More leverage while fighting fish to keep them out of the weeds. Easier to handle in a boat or kayak. Easier to land a monster while in a float tube or toon. Easier to bury the rod tip in the water...

Re: Is Spey/Switch for me?

For a switch rod that can handle steelhead you will not want to single hand cast it for more than a cast or two. Too much strain on the shoulder and elbow.

Re: Is Spey/Switch for me?

Anglers Roost 7/8 spey rod and an old Medalist reel would set you back maybe $200.

Re: Royal Wulff Ambush fly line

I have the 7wt. Don't get me wrong, the Ambush is probably my favorite line but its just not designed for mending. Very short and heavy head and a thin running line with hardly any rear taper. Still,...

Re: Underlining a rod

Underlining doesn't really fit the fishing I do. I'm usually trying to load the rod without much line out. When I do cast long its usually by shooting line and not by keeping a bunch of line in the...

Re: Royal Wulff Ambush fly line

Not the best line for indicator nymphing. Doesn't mend well.

Re: Good all around spey outfit. Beginner.

I would honestly go inexpensive and/or used for your first spey rod outfit. When I was a beginner, it took quite a while for me to become a proficient caster and there was no way I would have even...

Re: Rod Warranty

I've found that having no warranty is usually no big deal. Most of the rod manufacturers will sell you a rod section for less than $50. Even the manufacturer of a $700 spey rod was selling the tip...

Re: Life expectancy of monofilament?

Mechanical properties of nylon are negatively affected by acid, alkali, U.V., and O2 (time-temperature Arrhenius relationship). Of these factors, U.V. is probably the most commonly encountered...

Re: Beulah Platinum Switch Line Recommendation

Rod power ratings in the spey/switch world are basically meaningless. One company's 7wt may pair with a 400gr head and another company's 7wt may pair with a 500gr head. Take the Beulah recommended...

Re: 6wt rod 8ft ish.

+1 for the vintage glass suggestion. The Fenwick FF806 is pretty fast (8', 6wt), or you could try a FF807 and underline it with a 6wt line. These can usually be had for $50 and often sell for more...

Re: Long Hike, Great Times

Those F18's ARE actually from TopGun (Miramar NAS) and I believe they use the Needles (those granite domes) as a visual reference for some of their drills.

Re: 9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

I'd argue that most of the good natured discussions (ie arguements) on this board are mainly due to regional differences in the local fisheries. Someone who mainly throws dry flies to 8" brook trout...
