Re: Fishing small creeks
I fish small creeks in Iowa and use a 7'6" 4wt. I have rarely found a need for a longer rod and often find myself casting shorter distances and around things. A shorter rod makes this easier.

Re: Value priced waders and boots?
Keep an eye out on the Bass Pro Shop and Cabelas websites for the next 4 months. Last year about this time they had some Simms waders on sale (normally $200 were going for $75).

Size #20 on a 5x Tippet
I understand the tippet conversion for fly size, or so I thought. I see some charts showing a size #20 on a 6x tippet but others showing it going on a 5x. I usually only carry two sizes of tippets...

Re: Back To School
Welcome!
Cabelas has some really great outfits for a good price. I purchased a 4wt Traditions II / Three Forks combo a 2 years ago when I got back into fly fishing. It is a good set up.

I have a Fishpond lumbar pack which I love but never seems to feel "right" when I am small stream fishing (which is what I do 90% of the time). I am going back to a vest for trout but going to use...

Re: 4 or 5
I fish mainly spring creeks and use a 4wt. It is easier to present more delicate casts and is better in the wind than a 3wt. I also have a 6wt for smallies, pond fishing, etc. With these rods I...
