Re: New to Fly Fishing any Suggestions

Welcome to the forum! I live in Rocklin, myself. There are a lot of opportunities to fly fish in the northern CA area!

Right now Steelhead are 'the big thing', but a trout rod might be a bit...

Re: Importance of Reel Size?

Given your knowledge of Spey, would I need to add any weight to my LS 3.5X for the 7wt Echo TR? I'm thinking I'd just need another spool outfitted with skagit, running line, various sink tips and...

Re: Importance of Reel Size?

I'm not trying to be set-in-my-ways, I just don't want to spend more than I need to if I can't help it.

I was erring on the side of getting a 7 wt rod (like the Sage VXP or Echo TR) and just...

Importance of Reel Size?

I've been considering getting into Spey fishing. I don't entirely want to throw down several hundred dollars for a new reel to pair whichever rod I end up getting, though (most likely a #7 or #9 for...

Re: Sage Response & Approach rods

I own a 9' 8wt Response. It's a solid rod with very fast action. I'd say it's noticeably better than <$300 rods (I compared it and cast it along side to Redington's, TFO's and Orvis'). I haven't cast...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

Recently I had to ship back my new Response to Sage because of a defect in the cork, so I don't get my rod for another month and a half (probably). Sad times! But this weekend I'm going (Friday) to...

Re: New rod, New season. So far it looks good :)

Great job! Do you know if your BVK is the 2012 or 2011? I was looking into an 8 wt BVK but was told by my local shop that there were reports from buyers of the 2012 breaking when hooking into larger...

Re: Sage Response

Yeah, I called customer service and heard about that from the rep. She said I was the first person, ever, to call about the Sage Response rod since it is so new. I think it's a good sign (hopefully!)...

Sage Response

This is just a heads up to those interested in the new rod.

Recently I purchased the new Sage Response rod, 8 wt 9'. The rod itself is fantastic - lots of fast action and makes my amateur hauling...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

I could imagine when the fish are there, they bite well. If you remember the area there's a large barge moored to the left and across is the wildlife sanctuary with a fishing pier. I saw some small...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

I went to the Petaluma River this morning at your advice. I fished right by the gravel pit for about an hour from 7am-8am, but I don't think the fish had made it up that far by that time. I bounced...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

Oh, yeah. I am a little embarrassed it is the San Pablo bay. Sorry for the incorrect labeling. Petaluma River, eh? If you PM'd me approx coords on google maps or something it would help me go check...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

Yeah, if there was anyone with a boat there this morning they could have made a killing following these two schools that were hovering around the point for 2-3 hours. I just had to hope they would...

Re: Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

I went to Point Pinole today. Got out there around 6:15, and to the pier around 7:00. Lots of gulls were around, and in the distance fish were boiling. First pass through the pier, a few fish passed...

Point Pinole, San Francisco Bay

Friday I'm going to wake up early in the A.M. and make a day of fishing/hiking the coastline of the Point Pinole state park. I was curious if any of you have fished here and have any 'hot spots' (or...

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

Just an update for any of you who were interested in this thread....

I went in today to look at the rod. It was a beauty for sure, it cast like a charm and I was set to buy it however when looking...

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

Yeah, I'm probably going to walk away with the rod on Monday if it's in good condition and I can figure out my reel dilemma. I'd like a used reel, ideally, to outfit the rod since it's not brand new...

Re: Greetings from California!

Dennis - Thanks. I've, in fact, seen guides out at sunrise and sailor bar when I've gone out. If you've seen a dude in swim trunks the last week or two out there fly fishing, chances are it's been...

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

I was considering getting a new Ross CLA 4 off ebay for the rod. Forgive my naivety if I'm going overboard, but I was considering a newer reel for the drag technology and for the warranty. My concern...

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

@ John - Thanks! I'll read into it. I've read that Lamson is a solid reel manufacturer.

In that the reel would outclass the rod, or the rod outclasses the reel, or that the two wouldn't mix...

Re: Greetings from California!

Thanks for the welcome!

Dennis- thanks for the suggestions on what to hit up this time of year. I've been fishing, lately, in the American already for stripers but no luck yet (are they biting?)....

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

Well, alright! You guys have me convinced. I'll look it over Monday for flaws that might be potentially "rod-breaking", and if it seems to be in good shape I'll take it home with me.

Any...

Re: The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

I appreciate everyone's input. I've been erring on the side of bringing the cash with me when I look at it next week (when I meet with the guy, and practice some casting on it), but I think what has...

The 2-Piece Sage RPL, 9 wt, And My Concerns

I've been using my dad's old Fenwick 6wt fiberglass rod with a pfleuger medalist reel (I only use the most cutting-edge stuff) to fish stripers in the American River (I'm in California). Admittedly,...
