Re: Need help for choosing first saltwatet fly combo

I use an 11 wt Ugly Stik to fill that niche. Its mostly a shark/big tarpon that I just want to hook and fight, but not land rod. It does the job with an exposed rim medalist and I won't cry if it...

Re: Need help for choosing first saltwatet fly combo

Add the Orvis Tip Flex 8 wt to that Rip tide. They are both quality rods for a reasonable price. I like the Clearwater as it comes in 9'6" length and that helps on windy days or with big flies. But...

Re: Need help for choosing first saltwatet fly combo

Well rats. It was the bargain cave just last week. Sorry. Still it is a good buy at $89. And it is still on sale. You can get one with a three forks rod for $99. Now those rods are nothing to write...

Re: Need help for choosing first saltwatet fly combo

Gray's Sporting Journal. No how tos per se, just well written tales of hunting and fishing with beautiful photos. But you learn something with every issue.

Re: Ultralite fly setup

I have and love CT 3. It is true moderate action, a slow 4 count. It is a blast on gills, small bass and jacks and cats. But if you ape arm it you can throw heavy sinking flies. And for salt water...

Re: Ultralite fly setup

No offense taken. I was on the UL site ten minutes ago. Its a nice place, just very specialized, basically 3 wt and under. But I love panfish so I like it! Here we cover all aspects of the sport.

Re: Need help with rod/reel options for my son

Skip the seven weight. They are like the ugly twin of a five weight. The five is the jack of all tradss, but master of none, but still a good all arounder. The seven just sucks. Its too heavy for...

Re: All fished out rant

That seems odd. I mean blue gills breed like rabbits. I don't know what the
Fl. limit is as I C@R 90% of time in fresh water, but its a lot of fish. ( OK I checked, its 50 panfish, no limit on...

Re: Ultralite fly setup

Dude, there is no reason to even get close to $350. Its a bluegill rod and cheap works. I, and probably half of this board will sing the praises of the Reddington CT 3 wt which is currently on sale...

Re: Just bought a 1 wt!

Hey, I managed to screw up a relationship with a med student who fly fished, had her pilots license, liked blue grass and had the libido of a 14 year old boy. Affter messing up that bad, I figure one...

Re: A little help on my first self built outfit

Another way to measure, or I guess estimate is this. Take your shiny new fly line still rolled up and press it against the spool ( both sides of the rolled line). Not too hard, but with moderate...

Re: A little help on my first self built outfit

Good choice on the rod $$ for $$ it is damn hard to beat a CT. I own two in 3 and 5 wt. Both are great. The Okuma reel is heavy but solid. It has a decent drag and will do fine. Backing? Seriously?...

Re: Small stream rod

I would get a rod that will let whatever your average fish is show off. If 90% of your fish are 10" with the occasional behemoth, buy a light rod that will make them fun. If you lose the big one so...

Re: Redington CT: An Absolute Treat

I use Cabelas Prestige on my 3wt CT and its fine. I mean, hey its a 3wt, how far are you going to throw it? I use prestige premire on one of my 6 wts and it is adequate. In a perfect world I would...

Funny, I'm looking for a low end UL to entertain the bluegills.:D If any one wants to chime in on cheap as well as high end stuff it would be an interesting contrast.

Re: Need help with rod/reel options for my son

I use a 9'6" Clearwater 8 wt tip action for snook and small tarpon. It is paired with a Cabelas Prestige Premire reel {a Lamson} and it is a sweet outfit for relatively short $$. I would go with an...
