Re: What is the best trout fly reel ever made?

Ahhhhhh empiricism......nothing makes my day like properly applied numerical anecdotal evidence. Silver, I would love to buy you a frothy beverage....or some other fermented grain beverage if you...

Re: What is the best trout fly reel ever made?

I'm a bit shocked the names of Edward vom Hofe, Zwarg, or Walker haven't popped up on this thread.

Were you throwing that 8wt H2 for Tarpon? Or did the guide outfit you?

Re: Orvis T3

I have a T3 in a 9ft 7wt mid flex that has become my absolute, hands-down, favorite small water steelie and lake-run browns rod. I matched it with an SA WF-7-F textured mastery GPX line and it is...

Re: 3 wt Rod Recommendation (BVK maybe)?

With my 3wt BVK, I find it casts a 3wt line just fine. The first line I spooled was a Cortland 444 Wf3F. It was fine but was older when I spooled it, and deteriorated, so I went to the Rio. I have...

Re: 3 wt Rod Recommendation (BVK maybe)?

I have the BVK 3wt and the extension. I love the rod in both configurations. The 8ft IMHO is plenty delicate enough for presenting dries. I use a WF-3-F Rio Gold and have no trouble casting 40...

Re: Arrrrgggghhhhh! And I'm no Pirate!

The morning was pretty cold and dim. The water was VERY cold and high. The day wasn't too bad as it warmed to about 50. Yeah since then it has been pretty nice. Its about 70 outside today.....my...

Re: New Reel for BVK 5wt

I have the BVK in a 9ft 5wt, and I have it matched with a Hardy DD5000. I think that reel is absolutely a peach! I would not hesitate to match that rod to a BVK II reel, which is almost identical...

Re: Arrrrgggghhhhh! And I'm no Pirate!

Just wanted to follow up. Six of my buddies and their kids camped out Friday night with me next to the creek. It rained pretty hard the day before so the water was very high and fast. It got pretty...

Re: Favorite food on the water

When I fish, I fish! I just break off a convenient Birch Twig and chaw away! Or maybe I'll take a bite of whatever dead critter I come across.....Oh wait that's the show about the subsistence...

Re: New guy from SW Pa, [PLEASE help me find a good local place to fish]. :-)

Hello, and welcome fellow Keystoner! I am in Somerset County, about an hour or so south of Indiana, PA about a half hour south of Johnstown, if those references help. I see much posted land myself,...

Re: correct reel and rod wt for reds need help pls!

I fish for Reds in Louisiana, and my usual rod is an 8wt TFO BVK or an 8wt Orvis Helios. I have a 7wt Orvis T3 that I have been using for Steelies, and I think I may give it a shot at some Reds in...

Re: Deciding on a New 4wt Rod

The rods you mentioned in your post all have different taper profiles. Some are definitely faster than others. We all have our own preferences according to what we like. You are not us, please,...

Re: Chasing Reds

I think what you may be experiencing is that the Redfish have not migrated into that area yet. They stay out in deep(er) water until the water temp. tells them to run in. Can anybody verify or...

Re: East Coast Cicada Hatch

I remember the last big hatch here in southern PA. It was the best trout fishing I have ever had.....bar none! My Cicada fly is a a black and orange Bomber tied on a #4 streamer hook. I add 4...

Re: Tarpon: Crabs vs. flies

Actually, we don't cast these monsters. This is drift fishing, or even back trolling, and we recommend 14wt minimum for our clients. Yes, 12's will work, but in the deeper water where drift fishing...

Re: Tarpon: Crabs vs. flies

Our favorite is the "Glow Whistler", especially in dark water. If the water is very clear we go with brighter flies (yellow/orange works well).

Hook: 4/0 -6/0 Satinless

Re: fly lines

In June/July when it can be VERY hot, I do like the Tropical/warm water lines due to their stiffer cores, but in November, I would bet the coldwater lines would be fine. Honestly, even in the warmer...

Re: fly lines

I'll add my +1 to the ranks that like the Rio Outbound Short lines. I use the OB line in WF-8-F Tropical for Redfish in Louisiana, and have no complaint s at all. It loads the rod quickly, and...

Re: TFO warranty

Oh, I absolutely agree that there can be production/design flaws that cause failure. My point was, and I probably did a poor job of specifying it, that if a rod is going to fail due to a flaw it...

Re: TFO warranty

In my experience 99% of broken rods are user error. maybe not at the actual time of the break, but somewhere in the rods history a mistake happened. For example: while casting heavy clousers, the...

sage Fly Line

I just picked up several Sage Performance Taper Fly Lines (2, WF-5-F and a WF-3-F) at Cabela's on sale for $26 each. I am pretty sure Rio makes their lines. Can anybody confirm that?

Re: TFO warranty

Very simple. Lifetime, no questions asked, $25 will get you a new rod, or a replaced section.....usually a new rod.
