Re: Recommendations for Vail?

Try the Eagle River anywhere from Gypsum up to Minturn. For a guided trip consider the Colorado from Pump House down to wherever.

All the fly shops and their guides are ok. No standouts to speak...

re: Wyoming: "Small, Medium or Large (you're choice)" Creek Fishing

No. It's a strainer, the single most dangerous thing you can encounter on a river at high water. If you get tossed out of a boat or raft in high water, pray you don't get swept into one of those. If...

Re: West Side of YNP - rivers

Actually, you didn't miss anything. With the low snowpack this year those streams are already too warm for good fishing. The geothermal outpourings really affect the Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison (in...

Re: South Platte Closed

The South Platte at Trumbull is pumping 2000cfs, normal is 200 cfs for this date. In my 25 years in Colorado I never saw such a thing.

You guys must have had a ton of late season upslope storms....

Re: North Platte River Spring Flush Schedule

Having fished just about every major water from the Missouri in Montana to the Colorado at Lee's Ferry, I gotta admit that the North Platte at Grey Reef is head and shoulders the best Rainbow fishery...

Re: South Platte Skunked!!!

In my 22 years in Colorado, I have never caught a fish in a South Park stream in a heavy rain storm. That rain pounding down on s shallow stream totally puts the fish down.

The Dream Stream is all...

Re: Best private water Colorado

Try Boxwood Gulch. Not cheap, but the fish are huge. Bring lots of pellet flies.

re: Fishing Wyoming (additional photos 7/23/14)

Beautiful pictures.

I wonder if that bull moose is related to the one that had me run up a tree on the Buffalo River in Island Park ID in 1967. Not fun at all!

This year's Idaho/Montana trip

[Just got back from four days of fantastic fishing on the Henry's Fork and Madison rivers. Both rivers fished super well.

I stayed at Trout Hunter Lodge on the banks of the Henry's Fork just...

Re: YNP (And Surrounding Areas) Advice

I used to live in Idaho Falls and must tell you there is no good trout fishing within an hour. Spend the night in IF and get a decent start the next day.

Then hit the Henry's Fork on day 2. Good...

Re: Places that are world known... but lame?

There is no trout stream in the Intermountain Region that is truly lame. That said, the river that comes closest to being totally uninteresting to me is the 50 Mile Riffle section of the Madison....

Re: How realistic is a career as a fly fishing guide?

I became a fly fishing guide and ski instructor after a 28 year career in the Navy. I absolutely loved both jobs. In fact, after 28 years in nuclear powered submarines it is a real stretch to call...

Re: How do you identify the bugs ?

Ok, here is the Cliff Notes version of Western bug identification.

Mayflies- dainty little sailboats when sitting on the water. Their flight is soft and ephemeral (that's why some have the Latin...

South Boulder Creek below Gross Reservoir.

Drive Hwy 72 from Nederland to Ward. There are numerous high lakes and connecting streams in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. All are worth a try.

Big...

Re: mohawk lake Colorado

My Kip Carey's Official Colorado Fishing Guide says the first lake is barren, upper two have cutts, but my book is dated 2003. I would check with a fly shop in Breck for the latest.

Re: New to the sport and the forum - few questions

That's why I went to soft lead (or soft tungsten for YNP), Yes, it costs a bit more, but the ability to add or remove a tiny bit or a huge glop makes it worth every penny.

Whenever I buy a new...

Re: close to vail village - easy access

Access to Gore Creek in Vail is easy. Almost nothing is posted.

Unfortunately we had a big snow year, so Gore Creek and every other stream in Eagle County is in major run off. :(

I am resigned...

Re: epic hatch...

I've seen that kind of caddis hatch on the Arkansas River below Salida, CO in mid May. When the hatch is that dense, fishing is hopeless. Your fly is one of a million, and the odds of hooking a fish...

Re: Yellowstone Backcountry

Correct. The Gardner River joins the Yellowstone River at the town of Gardiner. Go figure.

Sheepeater cliffs is about 6-8 miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs on the Norris-Mammoth road.

Re: Yellowstone Backcountry

I recommend the Gardiner River at and above Sheepeater Cliffs. The fish are not huge but there are lots of them. Great place for novices.

Lots of camping around there also.

A good float guide gets $150 regardless of the fish caught. I value good...

On those few occasions when I hire a guide, I always make it a point to ask the guide NOT to net the fish. I'd much rather have him taking lots of pictures with my camera. However, if I'm fishing...
