Re: 6-Weight Renaissance

My first fly rod in 1962 was a Shakespeare Wonderod HDH or 7wt. I still have one that's never been fished. Terrible casting tool! The 6s I use today seem like 3wts compared to it.

Re: 6-Weight Renaissance

I couldn't agree more with S&S on the virtues of dry fly fishing with a 6 versus a 5, especially where I fish in Montana. The added mass of the line on bigger rivers makes everything easier. When I'm...

Re: Winston IM6 vs WT, which one to keep?

I own both an older IM6 27000 series and a WT 47000 series. Mine are definitely different although supposedly the same taper. You need to try both to determine which you like the best. The newer...

Re: Winston Nexus

I agree with Mark completely. The Nexus 6 is a true 6 and a fairly fast one. I fish a GPX on mine and it loves that line.

Re: ID this Winston

This is correct. Winston started rolling their own with 43500.

Re: 4 and 6 weight, or just a 5?

After many years of using a 5wt I have gone to the 4/6 combo and find it covers most all my trout fishing needs. I say most all because I use a 7 and some times an 8 for streamers at times.

Re: Fin Nor reels

I have a FinNor wedding cake #1 in almost perfect condition sitting on my wall unit in a plastic case. A true work of art that I enjoy looking at every day. For my trout work I now use Galvans almost...

Re: Loops/No Loops on Backing End of Fly Line, Rigging Options to Swap?

I whip a loop in the fly line with tying thread coat with UV loon glue and use a loop to loop connection to the backing. I form the loop in the backing with a Bimini twist but a Surgens or Fishermans...

Re: compact camera?

Definitely get a waterproof model. We have a small Nikon that will work to 14ft under and regularly take pictures of fish being released under water. You never have to worry about rain ,spray etc. I...

Re: How To: Drift an Indicator Nymph Rig

We call it the Ubangi rig! If you always try to keep I mind what the flys are doing and adjust the indicator to eliminate drag on the flys you will be OK. The current is usually a lot slower at the...

Re: Winston Nexus 9' 6wt

I own and fish the BIIx 6 , GVX 6 , and the Nexus 6 weights. The Nexus is a powerful rod which I love for biger rivers out West. The BIIX 6 has a softer tip but IMHO one of the best all round 6s ever...

Re: 9' 6wt for NC/TN smallmouth?

I would recommend a textured GPX line . The extra weight really works with this rod and you can shoot gobs of line with accuracy!

Re: 9' 6wt for NC/TN smallmouth?

Get the one that fits your type of fishing. The 6 is a great rod!

Re: 9' 6wt for NC/TN smallmouth?

I really can't compare the Nexus to the Z axis not having owned or cast one. The Nexus sort of reminds me of my older GLX Loomis rods. Powerful and requiring a faster stroke. The thing that really...

Re: 9' 6wt for NC/TN smallmouth?

I own both rods in 6 wt and the Nexus is an awesome rod with a faster action than the GVX. The Nexus works best with a GPX line while the GVX works great with something like a RiO Gold. They will...

Re: Abel - Tibor - Hatch

The Galvan Torques are great reels with a very smooth drag. I own Abels and a Hatch and prefer the Torques drag. Check out the Yelloestone Anglers 8 weight reel review from a few years back.

Re: Winston BIIx & BII-MX 6wt

The BIIx 6 is also one of my favorite trout rods. Does everything from small drys to nymphs and small streamers. The BIIMx 6 is a faster stiffer rod that can handle big streamers and wind but not...

Re: Simms G3

The two areas to pay attention to are inseam and shoe size. IMHO more inseam is better, so if there is a question go longer and the same with the stocking foot. In general the answer to your question...

Re: New fly rods?

I own the BIIx, GVX and a new Nexus all in 9' 6 weight and love them all. Each one has its own personally. The BIIx has a stiffer lower section than the GVX and the Nexus is more powerful/faster than...

I have a bunch of their rods and as with all brands there are certain models that stand out, both new and old. Try to cast as many as you can if possible. Winston's in general are more medium to...

Re: 2015 5-weight Reel Shootout

Re: Most Interesting Things You've Found Fly Fishing?

When I was a kid back in the 50s I ran a small trap line for muskrats. Paid for my first shotgun with the money I made. Only did that for 1 year and then leg traps were not being used in favor of the...

Re: 4 weight 8' 6" -- Winston GVX or other?

Believe it or not the BIIt is a little faster than the GVX and extremely accurate. I also own a couple of 8.5 5 weight Winstons. One is the older IM6 with a serial in the 26000. That rod is smooth...
