Re: where the big trout live

I still use an 8wt, with a Rio 300 gr. integrated running line.
Control depth with troll speed (fins, oars, etc....)
Tip twitch, tip twitch, Ad infinitum.......

Back in the day?......

Re: Bird's Nest Fly

For the real tyers out there, Andy has a whole series of flies on u tube.
Even if you don't live for tying, he gives away a lot of little tricks that make life easier, and help catch more fish. One...

Re: Bird's Nest Fly

The Birds nest originated on the Truckee I believe, and still works here.
I prefer it tyed sparsely (like Cal's top fly, maple), and although all the tyes posted were sweet, if tyed in olive and...

Re: Galvan Rush: Drag Question

Quimby, if you hook up with a big fish, and you have slack line lying around, it may tangle up on a fast run and you'll lose the fish (A loop of line can catch the reel handle, or rod butt very...

Re: Galvan Rush: Drag Question

The Galvans have done right by me.
Tech tip, the R-8 spool is interchangeable with the T-8. Same drag..

Re: Ice off

Jay, didn't mention using Stanley's on the line. Just line cleaners..
And, I carry a back-up tube of chapstick in the truck...
We have a warm window, so no "ice" fishing right now.
Thankfully....

Re: Gas attack

I've been exposed to enough kinds of chemistry to last me, so I'll take the gentle route.
Thanks for all the help/commiseration..
Most flies were not doused directly, merely seriously fumigated. ...

Re: Gas attack

Dan, do you think unreconstituted lemon will work? I have some of that, HA.
I'll try Dawn, with an astringent rinse.
Who knows, they might like a sour treat?
Maybe I should soak in fish oil (WD)...

Re: Gas attack

Thanks for all the immediate support, and pm's. This sort of thing is traumatic....
Dam near needed CPR. I realized you can't do that by yourself. (possible product idea?)
Fysh, so little faith!...

Gas attack

OK, now I need help....
My boat's fuel tank vapor guard was left open sitting in the camper.
It tipped over, and dripped onto TWO steelhead fly boxes! $200-300 in time,at least, let alone burning...

Re: knotless flyline to backing?

I've tried about everything out there, and settled on Bigcliffs approach. (Needle knot/knot sense.) Besides sliding better through the guides, UV seals the end of the line too, so water won't wick up...

Re: Sage Fly Rods

Now that your search is over, I hope it's true love.
The XP was too stiff for most folks flinging a dry fly. Which I think is why they discontinued it. Maybe losing dryfly market to Winston.......

Re: Ice off

Jackster's approach works most of the time for me.
Literally, single hand style. The other in your pocket keeping warm.
A fixed amount of line out, and water-load/rollcast.
No line through the...

Re: Sage Fly Rods

Hey Mike, let me know if you don't like the 6wt XP.
For the water here, and our style, it is my favorite ever.
I will try and wait patiently till they make something as good.
I think the 99 was a...

Re: old guy problem - seeing #20 midge dries

Brian, the T is in CA. and NV.
One of a few rivers that terminate inland. (Headwaters near the eastern CA. Sierra crest,
and terminus at Pyramid lake 40 min. north of Reno..)
Plus, I live in...

Re: Another spey myth busted?

Glad to read the last two posts.
When I started I even wore a wet suit, and dabbled in "extreme wading".
(Think swimming with a fly rod.)
And of course, casting to those far away...

Re: old guy problem - seeing #20 midge dries

Brian, I'm in denial on the old thing. (and will be until proven otherwise)
I operate like a 38, more than a 50. Just cannot see close anymore.
Twisting feathers is tough for for my fingers, love...

Re: old guy problem - seeing #20 midge dries

Mike, glad to hear you are getting out...
I've gone into full time midge fishing lately. I have trouble tying them on, but can see them on the water, mostly...
I think this is one of the high bar...

Re: Line color... again

Mike, great experiment! You are correct, it's the same on the water, as it is on your desk.
I have looked up from underwater too.
Two english guys wrote a book in the 80s, (Trout and the fly. By...

Re: In Yellowstone, Killing One Kind of Trout to Save Another

Watson, I don't think good neighbor has anything to do with it.
The bumper sticker in NV. summed it up well. "I don't care how they do it in CA.".
But when you have a limited budget for stocking...

Re: In Yellowstone, Killing One Kind of Trout to Save Another

Watson, all I meant, is that if you see that a neighbor has a problem of some expensive sort, you may avoid it, by acting proactively.
I've heard the pike in question in CA., may have come from a...
