Re: Winston's relaxed action rods ?

I fish my Winston 8 ft. 2 piece (tmf) on the smaller streams and love it. I wish I would have gone with slower action rods from the start. More my speed.

Re: Line suggestion for Sage Z Axis 590-4

I have sa gpx on my z axis 590-4. I like the way it casts and it seems to roll cast just fine also. If you cast by feel as opposed to looking I think you will like it.

Re: Tippett rings

I agree with fly guy, Joni put them on my 4 and 5 wt leaders and they work great.

Re: Smith Optics vs Costa Del Mar

I use the Maui Jims copper glass. They are a little heavy, but easy to take care of. I found that I got use to the weight and tend to forget their on. I fish generally small trout streams with a fair...

Re: Sage Fly Rod Cosmetics

I have a Winston gvx in 6wt and a TMF. They are beautiful rods no doubt. I also have a Sage z axis 5wt. I think that also is beautiful. I believe the more I use any specific rod I become more...

Re: Rio Smallmouth vs Orvis Smallmouth line

I just bought the Rio sm in 6wt. Plan on trying it soon as it arrives. I'll let you know what I think. It's still to early in NJ for smallmouth, so I'll just mess around seeing how it cast's.

Re: 6wt Ross F1, Orvis Mirage, or Tibor Backcountry

I second the vote for the Abel 5n. I fish it on my winston 6wt gvx and have no complaints. It seems to meet your criteria of "drag performance, reliability, and durability".

Re: 6wt Tibor Back country CL, Ross F1, or Orvis Mirage

No experiance with the Ross or Orvis. I had a Tibor Light years ago that was fine. I currently am using an Abel super 5n on my 6wt. and love it.

Re: 9' 6wt ?

Not sure what your looking at price wise, there are a few places offering Winston 9' 6wt GVX rods at quite a discount.

Re: Abel Reels

I am currently using an Abel TR1 on my 8' 4wt winston tmf and it's working out great for me. I find the TR1 has enough adj. (although it is internal) for the trout I fish for in NJ. I currently am...

Re: Abel Reels

I am an older guy with a son who is 26. He is currently not in the position to spend big bucks on top quality equipment. I have been fortunate enough to be able to splurge on items once in awhile. I...

Re: Abel Creek 1 LA vs SA for my Sage LL 389?

I use an Abel TR1 on my Winston 8' 4wt and love it. Balance seems great for me. I think either the creek or tr would be great on your rod!

Re: Abel or Hatch????

On a smaller scale, I use a Hatch 3 Finatic on my 5wt, but I just ordered an Able 5n for my 6wt. I will let you know what I think comparison wise when I receive and get a chance to use it. By the...

Re: 6 wt for bass poppers?

Thanks for all the info. on this subject. I think I will end up trying #6 poppers with the SA bass line. I haven't fished this rod at all yet, I'm in NJ and it's not exactly bass time yet. I figured...

6 wt for bass poppers?

I have a 6 wt Winston GVX that I would like to use for smallmouth. Do you think that would be able to throw a #4 popper like a ez popper? Would you suggest a particular line? Thanks again folks!

Re: Is it better to have a 4wt and a 5wt, or a 4wt and a 6wt?

I think a 4 and 6 would cover everything. Of course what I think and what I do are two different things. I use my 4 wt TMF for tight areas I am fishing, my 5 wt for larger river areas I have access...

Re: Question on reel weight for a 9' 6wt.

I tend to agree with the statement above about weight. I don't see why there is an issue on reel weights (within reason). I don't understand how an oz. or 2 can throw a 5 or 6 wt. rod off balance...

Question on reel weight for a 9' 6wt.

I have a Winston GVX rod that I need to get a reel for. My question is that one reel weighs 4.2 oz. and the other weighs 5.2 oz.. Does this really make a difference? It seems to me that once you have...

Re: Best reel for Winston 8' 4wt tmf ?

I finally ended up with the Abel TR1 in black (with free backing and Abel nippers). I am putting Wulff TT 4 wt F line on it. Thanks again for all the ideas folks!

I had to get one also. I chose the 9' 6wt. Haven't had the chance to use it yet (still have to get a reel?) but I have read good things about it. Plan on TRYING for some NJ smallmouth. Have a good...
