Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

With the unusually cool weather yesterday, I had a few hours in the afternoon to kill.

The streams are not all crystal clear here yet (one very famous stream south of I90 outside of Chatfield is...

Re: What to expect from a guide?

All good advice so far.

As someone who guides, I ask questions up front - level of experience, physical limitations, what is it they are looking for out of their day. I ask about casting up front,...

Re: Driftless Region or Colorado Help

I'd take MN over Iowa as well just due to the fact that there is a ton more eased water to fish.

I guided a couple of guys last weekend - friends and clients. One guy is from Colorado and comes...

Re: What "new to you" skill or accomplishment in flyfishing are looking to do this se

I continue to try and make my opposite hand casting as proficient as my dominant hand. Try is the key word there.....

Re: What do you feel is YOUR most important "TOOL" when fishing?

My polaroids, hands down. I'd rather forget an essential fly box than to not have my polaroids.

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

Which is why I can't, in good conscience support the efforts of most stream restoration in the southeast. It's not that I'm anti-TU or the DNR, but I feel like they've lost their way, to be honest....

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

DR,

Sounds like the Conservation Corps got a hold of it and did the brushing, similar to what was done on Gribben a few years back.

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

I was in Iowa with a few buddies on a non-stocked area. Fishing was fabulous.

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

You should be in good shape. Our streams are a bit low, IMO. No real rain or precip. lately, so the rains would be very welcome.

Re: Wading pants

Where I happen to live and fish (Midwest), our streams aren't super deep, so I've been going the wading pants route for quite a while. I've mainly stuck to Redington's because of the price, and...

Re: Driftless Area fishing rig

8'6" to 9" and 3-5 in weight. Wind is a constant, but if you are dealing with 6' wild parsnip, you need a longer rod to stay over the top of it.

I fish where there is significant parsnip and...

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

I got out a bit on Saturday and all day Sunday. The weather was kind of miserable on Sunday, but the catching was great. A few Blue Quills were popping around 1:00. The hatch was not thick, but...

Re: How many waders do you have?

I own two pars of Redington basic river pants and a pair of old school neoprenes for winter. My theory is to wear them out, pitch them, and start over every X amount of years.

I am not a big wader...

Re: Here's an article for the Minn and Iowa Driftless Fishers

HoCo doesn't have a lake, and neither do the rest of the counties in the Driftless of southeast MN. Basically, if there is a lake south of 90, it's man-made.

Without reading Bob's book, I do hope...

Re: On average how many flies do you carry in your fly boxes?

I used to be that guy that carried enough flies to outfit a fleet of anglers. However, since ridding myself of a vest and going to a fishing pack many years ago, I have gone much more minimalist. I...

I prefer to fish alone or with a handpicked friend (that list is about three people long). My 12 year-old has turned into one of my preferred partners. He's not full-on into fly fishing, but he likes...

Re: How Did You Get Your Wife Into Fly Fishing?

Bring her down for a weekend in the Driftless, and I'll help. Women clients are way easier to teach at casting than men. They come with no macho bravado that they should know how to cast a rod, so...

Re: 2016 Driftless Trout Pics and Reports

I got out late this morning and into the early afternoon before the next snonami blasts the Midwest. Fishing was good. Got out an old rod that I don't fish as much as I should - Sage 389LL. I forgot...
