I just got a "hard" sided rod and reel case from Cabelas, for 4 piece rods which is about 32 inches long. I found a canvas duffle bag cut in a rectangular shape at 36" long and within the size limit...

Thanks guys, I think I will go back and get an 8 wt. I'm not really opposed to trying a spinning rod, but unbelievable as it may sound, and me from Minnesota at that, but I've never owned any other...
