There are walk-in areas around the deer lodge-anaconda area. The first 10 miles after the settling ponds has great fishing and easy access. Plus in all the times i fished around there hardly anyone...

I just bought a 10 year old 4.7L Tundra because they last forever and you can find them for under 10,000 dollars with a reasonable amount of miles. The downside is that they do not get any better...

The boulder river south of big timber is just as close as the gallatin, and much closer than the madison. You can either wade under the high water mark, or go to a fishing access site. I always did...

I regularly fish for trout with an 8 wt. I dont like packing multiple fly rods with me and it is much easier to cast small dry flies on an 8 wt than it is to cast large tandem streamers on a 5 wt.
