Re: Planning a YNP Trip - Seeking Advice

I'd second the suggestion to stay in Cooke City and concentrate your efforts on that side of the park. Even if you stayed in West Yellowstone, your choices of short drives to good water are more...

Re: How do you nymph?

Let me see if I can give you a beginner type starting point, from which you can delve more deeply into all the finer nuances of nymphing...

1. Pick your nymphing water to begin with. The easiest...

Re: New to fly-fishing

I would say, don't worry about the reels; reel quality is unimportant when learning to cast and totally unimportant when fishing for smaller fish like bluegill or average size trout or bass. All...

Re: Evolving!

You can cast heavier streamers on a 5 wt., and you can land big fish on a 4 wt. And casting a 3-5 wt. rod is more pleasurable than casting a 6-8 wt. rod. But there are tools that are better for...

Re: Boating Regulations For Rivers

Just depends upon the individual waterway. I live half the year in Missouri and half in Montana. In Missouri there are no restrictions except on the few streams that are federally controlled, where...

Re: What are you getting when buy riverfront property?

I own two pieces of riverfront property, one in Montana, one in Missouri. With both, I get the benefit of being able to walk out my front door (in Montana) or out of my car parked at a private...

Re: what hooked you?

My dad gave me a fly rod back when I was a kid in the 1960s, but I didn't try using it much, mainly to catch bluegill from a couple of local ponds. I was (and still am) an avid stream smallmouth...

Re: Best way to travel with gear

Shouldn't be any problem to carry any kind of lures in checked baggage. I've carried a Plano box full of bass lures with multiple big treble hooks in carry-ons several times and haven' had any...

Re: North Fork of White River

Can't give you a report, but the river should be in good shape to fish, so you should be able to catch some. Streamer fishing can be good this time of year, and nymphs always work.

Re: Help me read big slow water, please!

Dry and dropper close to the banks if there is enough current to actually make them drift instead of just sitting there.

Strip a streamer everywhere else that there is very little current.

Re: An old question with maybe a new twist. Maybe.

As somebody who lives both in Missouri and Montana, I have found that the best thing is to have a 4 wt, 5 wt., and 6 wt. fact, I keep one of each in both places, along with a 3 t. in...

Re: Winter bass fishing.

I agree. I do a lot of winter stream bass fishing in Missouri, but I don't bother to use the fly rod to do so. If you can find a warm water discharge or a good sized spring coming into the river...

Re: I forgot just how funny a boat ramp can be.

I've only had two minor mishaps launching. One was on a ramp crossways to strong current...the current picked up boat, trailer, and all, and pushed it sideways off the ramp into deep water. No harm...

Re: Most know that Yellowstone Park is just a large Volcano looking for a place to ha

Yeah, it's a threat on a scale that can't be prepared for. There's the potential for an eruption so major it would affect the entire globe, and cause years of "nuclear winter", resulting in mass...

Re: Things they carry...

I carry the same three fly boxes (a Bugger Barn for streamers, a smaller one for nymphs, and a smaller yet for dries). 6 spools of tippet (1X to 4X fluoro, 5X and 6X mono) on a spool holder attached...

Re: "Fly fishing" split shot really sucks

I'd rather use split shot than weight the flies themselves, because I think an unweighted fly drifting along is more natural. The real bugs aren't made out of lead. I want my nymphs to be drifting...

Re: Fish Hook Removal

I've had to remove hooks from myself and others using that trick a number of times, but only once with a fly, because I almost always pinch down the barb when fly fishing. The one time I didn't...

Re: Yellowstone - Madison and Gibbon

Don't know when you're talking about by saying "spring", but hope you know that fishing season within the park doesn't open until Memorial Day weekend.

Re: Besides Fly fishing, What do you like to do?

My profession is a hobby for many people...I'm an artist. I'm also a bipolar angler, spending about half the year in Montana fly fishing for trout, the other half the year in Missouri stream fishing...

Re: Should guiding on public waters end?

Living part time on the Yellowstone River and spending a lot of time fishing it, I see a LOT of guides and their clients. They probably do add to the fishing pressure, in two ways...they bring more...

Re: Seriously, why do some people catch more fish than others?

I think there are lots and lots of factors, but really they all boil down to two general things:

Experience and efficiency.

Experience--the guy that knows the water, knows how to read water,...

Re: brown trout as invasive species

Of course they can be invasive. The definition of invasive is if a critter is stocked or escapes into an ecosystem in which it is not native, and spreads, to the detriment of the native species. ...

Re: question for you all on indicators

My normal nymphing with an indicator is done either in fast, choppy riffle water where it drops off, or in deeper runs with good current or along eddy lines in deeper water...water deep enough that...
