Re: Sage RPL fly rod

I have 2 RPL's,a 6wt and an 8wt and that rod is perfect for your needs.I fish my 6wt in both fresh and saltwater and it handles fairly large flies and is easily uplined to a 7wt.My 6wt has probably...

Re: Shortening a Fly Line

Just cut your line to 90' and keep all your backing. This is a common practice and ive done it many times.Just make sure you cut it off running line and not off the front taper.

Re: Rod weight question

Re: Using heavier line question

I fish the Fenwick 806 and it does well with either a 6wt or 7wt line.Fished it last night with a 6wt SA GPX line but I prefer a 6wt Clouser line. For bigger flies I will use a 7 with no...

Re: Fresh and saltwater rod?

If your only going to get 1 rod then definitely go with an 8wt.Yeah,an 8 is overkill for most LMB but it allows you to throw most any bass fly you want.It will handle just about all FW fish and about...

Re: New fly rod.

You might want to consider one of the short bass rods from Redington or Ross.I have a 6wt Redington Predator and its really a 7wt but casts nicely.Just a fun rod to fish poppers with.I have heard...

Re: The quintessential 8ft 4 wt?

I can also recommend an Orvis 7'11" 4wt rod.I still have mine that I bought back in 1982 and its just a sweet rod to fish.It should do everything you want for a 4wt.

Re: 6wt rod 8ft ish.

Runningfish,I don't own the Shorestalker.I just threw that out as an option as a shorter rod.The Predator works very well but I keep going back to my 8'8 6wt" Scott Heliply. Its a much nicer rod to...

Re: 6wt rod 8ft ish.

G Loomis Shorestalker is 8'6" and is around $350.I also have the Redington Predator but I get tired of fishing it.I tried the TFO mini-mag but the 6-8 rod needed at least an 8wt line to make it work...

Re: What length bass leader

I just go with a 6ft piece of #15 mono.My bass fishing usually involves stumps and lily pads so if I hang up a popper in that stuff,I like to get it back.Besides, bass are not leader shy so theres no...

Re: 6wt freshwater to a saltwater setup???

I fish a 6wt almost daily in both FW and SW.For the salt I prefer to throw a 7wt intermediate line but also use a floater as well as sinking and sink tip lines. My leader for the floater is usually...

Although I don't own any of the specific reels you listed,I do fish J Ryall reels in FW and SW.This reel is pretty much exactly like the Teton you listed.I believe the makers of both reels are...

Re: Your go to streamer rod

Although I don't fish for trout anymore my Sage 690 RPL throws streamers and poppers very nicely.Works well in the salt too.Probably caught more different species on this rod as any other rod I own.

Re: ? on a bass rig...

I agree with a 9' 6wt rod.I fish 6wt's almost daily for bass and light saltwater. Most will handle flies to sz.2 with no problems and you can always upline with a 7wt line for bigger flies. You will be...

Re: Reel for a saltwater 6 wt

I fish a couple of different reels on my SW 6wt rods.A Ross Canyon 3 is my favorite but I also use a J Ryall #6.I would pick up a Ross Gunnison or Cimarron.Either reel would work fine.A Teton or...

Re: Short 6 wt

Another vote for the short Redington Predator.I also upline mine with a 7wt bass taper and it throws a variety of bugs very nicely.Makes a great canoe rod.

Re: Old Orvis "Seven-Eleven" 4wt Full Flex: What have I got?

You picked up a nice rod there.I still have my 7-11 that I bought in the early 80's but it hasn't been fished in a number of years. It used to see lots of action back in MD for trout.Probably as close...

Re: Scott Heliply 8'8 8wt

Re: Newbie needs help with first set up

Ive been at this game a long time and I also agree on a 6wt outfit.A 6wt will do most all freshwater and some light saltwater fishing.I probably fish a 6wt more than any other weight rod.It makes a...

Re: Small River Streamer rod

Another way to go would be a vintage glass rod,say a 7.5' or 8' Fenwick. These can be had for $100 or less and perform very well in tight areas.Glass tends to load with less line out and I feel they...

Re: hooks for largemouth
