Re: Sunfish with a UL fly rod!

I took out my new steffen 2/3wt glass rod for the first time the other day. My four year old and me caught 3 blugills. Wow, never had so much fun catching sunnies! My son caught a larger one and it...

Re: Could use advice for slow action rod.

Buy a CTS blank and built one.

Their Quartz model is S-glass and is a medium action. They also make a moderate-slow action called the Vintage. The Vintage is graphite but intended to emulate cane....

Re: Smallmouth Bass Fly Line

I have a rio smallmouth line. I like it a lot but I don't think the "smallmouth" title has anything to do with it. I just think its good weight forward line. I just used it to swing wet flies for...

Re: Casting fatigue question

Try a heavier reel or some lead core before the backing. I learned that lesson the hard way. If the rod is too tip heavy it will cause a strain.

Also, IMO an 8' is better for a bass rod than 9'

Re: First Fly Rod Help! Allen,Redinton,St.croix or Loop

Welcome to the forum! You need to cast some rods to see what like best.

I happen to be a fiberglass guy and not of fan of super fast action rods.

I hated the hardy sintrix, although I know...

Re: Are specialized fly lines overkill?

I don't doubt that for large flies for salt water or musky that more weight forward won't help. I just think that you don't need much different line for smallmouth, largemouth, trout, steelhead, etc.

Re: Are specialized fly lines overkill?

My smallmouth line has a "warm water coating".

There isn't that much difference in water temps when fishing smallmouth or trout. The difference between the warmest smallmouth creek and the...

Are specialized fly lines overkill?

For years we had DT of WF lines. Now, for instance, if you look a Rio's website they have steelhead, smallmouth, pike & musky, carp, etc.

Really?

I have a rio smallmouth taper 7WF and, rather...

Re: The Unknown Smallmouth Bass River

I grew up fishing largemouth, then when I was about 10 we started fishing a local creek and caught smallmouth. Some years later I caught one about 5lbs in the creek during high fast water and I was...

Re: Wading the Salmon River

The DSR has been closed for almost a week because flows were over 2000. I think they actually went to 3000. They reopened today as flows are down to 1800.

I heard guys were actually fishing in...

Thank you, I'll have to try that. I imagine that the twitch causes a reflex reaction. They don't have much time to decide whether or not to strike.

I read with Atlantics on a dry flies that if...

Re: Salmon river , New York

Well said!

As for rod weight. Go with a 9 for kings on the Salmon River. It will protect the tippet better. I bet $1m that if you took a poll the vast majority would say 9wt.
Get a reel with a...

The do hit estaz eggs. But, they hit out of aggression. Same reason atlantic salmon hit dry flies. I like to sight fish and set it up so the fly drifts right in front of the fish.

Even run a...

Re: Salmon river , New York

Not totally true. It depends on when/where you go. If you go to altmar on a Saturday then yes it will be pack with idiots. There are other spots and better days to go.

Re: Salmon river , New York

Salmon is fish in a barrel. Steelhead fishing is great there but catch rate won't be close.

I personally like Salmon better. I know a lot of guys don't. 30lb king on a fly rod is awesome.

My opinion is a 9wt is perfect for salmon. The guide is great first time to show you the rigging. I use Tom Birke and I think he's fantastic.

Don't try and save a couple bucks at the expense of...

He wasn't fishing for King Salmon, he was fishing for Atlantic Salmon.
He refers to the big one in the pool as the king.

Awesome show. I'm going up there this summer. Looks unbelievable.
