Re: Wading boots ?

I've used the discontinued leather Simms Guide boots (two pair in fifteen years) for years. I fish and walk quite a lot and had no complaints. Even had the the toe cap replaced after five years at a...

Re: How to evaluate the risk of Smaller-sized Companies?

I would not let a lack of an unconditional warranty keep me from owning and fishing a rod that I like. I have broken a rod before and paid for the repair. I liked the rod and it was less than the...

Re: Spey line............HUH?????

NM, while I do fish a two hander here in Ohio there are many here more qualified to answer or give advice. I do however feel qualified to recommend you also bring your Winston BIIx five weight. You...

Re: Rio Outbound Short help!

If you are casting BIG flies then also use a BIG piece of yarn and get it good and soaked to practice with. It will more closely match what you are trying to do or practice cast on the water (...

Re: Casting fatigue question

If you are doing a lot of false casting to work the line back out every cast then you might want to consider one of the ultra short shooting heads (e.g. Wulff Ambush heads or full line) with a...

Re: numbers?????

As much as I like to think that it isn't about the catching, whenever I find myself hiking along a river or lake, I sure wish I had brought a rod. So being in nature sure is great, it is just a...

Re: Are specialized fly lines overkill?

I don't think that you need all the different lines that are out there. But there are some radically different specialty lines for specific situations that could help. I use the Wulff Ambush lines...

Re: I'm a two hander now.

baseman, take them up on their offer of casting lessons!! I found it really awkward feeling the first time I tried and having an experienced caster giving pointers really sped up the learning...

Re: Orvis Battenkill 5/6 disc reel - maker?

They are good reels for the money and I have owned a couple of them for over twenty years. Just do the rudimentary maintenance, wash after using in the salt, back off the drag when storing, and oil...

Re: St. Croix Avid 6'6" 4 weight

I have fished that rod for number of years now and it works fine with a 3 or 4 wt line. My rod is a three piece dark blue color and I don't know the configuration of the newer Avids. Montana and...

Re: Pflueger medalist

yes, you should use it. They are very good reels and have a good track record. Obviously they are not made to the tight tolerances of newer reels but they can take a lot of abuse and keep on working.

Re: Loomis.....losing fans and market share?

I own only one Loomis, a GL3, which I thought was a great value when they were on closeout. I've always considered the rest of the Loomis rods as high priced and fast action rods. I am sure I am...

You might be speeding up your casting motion too much, instead of applying power from the haul. Try casting at a comfortable distance (35-40 ft?) without hauling and then without changing tempo start...

Re: “grinning-guy-holding-the-big-fish" photos

I like the grip and grin shots. It looks like the angler is enjoying himself and wants a photo memory of it. I see nothing wrong with it and it can be done with minimal harm to the fish. If someone...

Re: Which Winston?

The Winston WT 8'6" 4 wt is a smooth rod that for me feels like I am just pointing my finger and the fly goes there. I have never used it for streamer fishing so I can't say how an Ambush line would...
