Re: Remote/hard to get to fishing

The best thing is that there are hundreds of places that are just like that. Everyone can find their own. I might not be able to hike to many of the places we have found anymore, but they still...

Re: Storing tippet

I picked up two ripple foam fly box refills, the kind with a sticky back, and stuck them back to back together. Then I put a quarter inch slit in the edges of the valleys. It works great to wrap my...

Re: Not trout. But better than not fly fishing....

I love fishing for other species besides just trout. Panfish, bass, carp, or whatever hits the fly. It's all good fun. I haven't caught a white bass yet, but they look like they would be a blast...

Re: Upper Michigan River (CO)

I don't know where Jefferson is. I am not from Colorado. I'm just here for awhile babysitting grandkids. I love to explore and fish a bit when I get time. Anyway I was upstream from Gould, Colo. ...

Re: Expensive reel for a 3 wt rod?

Lots of good suggestions.

I also agree with getting one to balance the rod. I personally like a lite reel. Try it out and see if you like the action, sound, feel.

Another thing to watch for...

Re: Remote/hard to get to fishing

Idaho's Teton River Canyon

Beautiful, but a bugger to get down into. Plus there are lots of rattlesnakes in residence. The fish are also beautiful.... Snake River Cutthroats.

Re: Mistakes....

If we all were perfect the first time, life and fly fishing would get very boring. I love that there is always more to learn and each new fish and fishing hole is different. Enjoy the journey!

Upper Michigan River (CO)

After looking on Google Earth at the Upper Michigan River, I decide to try a section where the river veers away from the road for a ways. It looked like it might be pretty good. The stream size was...

Re: Pressure and mousing

Use a red light or red cellophane over your flashlight. It takes about 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. The red light doesn't wreck your night vision.

Re: when is it too late

When the fish quit taking them.

They are always worth a try. Several late season caddis hatches, BWO etc, I have even fished hoppers into the beginning of November. It will depend on your...

Re: Fluorocarbon vs. Mono Leaders - when to use what

I also want to add that there are major differences in some brands of both mono and of floro.

Make sure that what you get is 100% florocarbon and not some coated junk.

In florocarbon, I...

Re: Fluorocarbon vs. Mono Leaders - when to use what

Tippet is a smaller diameter. Most uses it won't make a difference. Only in very small dry flies to very spooky fish would I consider that it might be needed. If that is what you fish, pick up a...

Re: Fluorocarbon vs. Mono Leaders - when to use what

Both have advantages and disadvantages for different situations. I like floro. In the smaller weights it doesn't seem to break as often as mono.

One thing that hasn't been taken into account...

Re: Living outdoors

I know of several vented heater setups that will work for off road camping.

One is the Dickinson line of boat heaters. They use very littlefloor space, heat well, are quiet, and use either no...

It is cool. But steep at about $60,000 au, not including the shipping.

I have seen some expedition trailers built that would come pretty close to it though.

Everyone has different needs. So...

I boondock camp about two months of the year in spurts of from 2 days to 2 weeks or more. I go from early spring to as late as November. At high elevations in Idaho it can get pretty cool at night,...

Thanks! Great suggestions.

I knew that I could get into the CGB cutts in Dream Lake, but I really like stream fishing better. I'll give further up the Big Thompson a try. Hopefully later this...

I agree with Mojo and Siege. Jimmy's in Idaho Falls and Rodger's Portneuf River Outfitters in Pocatello are the best. Great people and good to everyone that comes in.

I have also been to some...
