The term "expensive" is subjective. In terms of $, no you don't need to spend alot of money on a reel for this rod. OTOH, you want to spend enough that you get the right features. A mack truck...

You need to hike up to get into cutties prolly. Maybe like Fern? (I think Fern has Cutts).

BOA for me, I'll probably never go back.

My Simms boots are so comfy, I have no pressure points with them and the BOA speed lace system is super easy to get in and out of. Just too convenient.

So this just released today (7/14/14).

Kind of a cool app, I just wish it had older rod models too and not just this years? It's not rocket science but I think for an angler starting out trying...

That was the best solution in hindsight I could think of. Definitely a lesson learned in terms of fishing with a new guy and having a backup plan of sorts to allow for variables.

Quick report on my trip:

I left early this AM, and drove about 1.5 hours (about a third of the trip was on gravel/dirt roads). It was beautiful, and I got into some nice water. Good fishing...

I definitely will use a big 'ol foam hopper or a chubby chernobyl as an indicator most of the time! Gink or dust it up. Works like a charm!
