Re: Line recommendation

If only I could get my mitts on an NRX to sample before I drop the sizeable coin they're asking for them. There's not a dealer to be found even remotely near me and when I emailed G Loomis the...

Re: Canoe vs Kayak vs Pontoon

I went through a few float tubes then a canoe but once I tried a pontoon I never looked back and have no regrets.
With a kayak or canoe, aside from the ever-present knowledge that they can easily...

Re: 2014 5-weight Shootout: Fly Rod Review and Test

I have single foot guides on a number of rods. When I first started using them I did get some sort of harmonic from the guides then I figured out my line was too clean... squeaky clean you might say....

Re: 2014 5-weight Shootout: Fly Rod Review and Test

You did a whole lot right with this test. It was genius letting a group with a range of casting abilities do the tests. I sure would have liked to be a fly on the wall during that testing.
I get...

Re: 9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

I must be doing it all wrong. If I'm off to a place I've not been and don't really know what sort of conditions to expect the 9', 5 wt. comes with me.
I really think it's the tool and the craftsman...

Re: Finding a wader leak

That only makes sense. I've heard of people filling the whole wader with water. That is one heck of a load that waders just aren't designed for.
The alcohol method has always worked for me.

Re: G.Loomis - A New Industry Standard?

No way would I count G Loomis out. bet G Loomis sells more conventional rods than all of the companies mentioned in this thread combined.
After being with Steve Rajeff at our iFFF fly fishing...

Re: The basics of a double haul

You're really hindering yourself if the line is dirty or sticky. Having the mass of a lot of line out and good momentum from a good and proper acceleration and stop will go a long way toward easing...

Re: Common Cents Rod Rating Method...interesting results

Instead of relying on a scale system I find that casting rods with the line I want to use is pretty much fool-proof way of picking a new rod.
The best way to do that is at a fly fishing show if one...

Re: Curve to the right

You can learn to cast left handed and then use the traditional techniques already mentioned to curve right if typically right-handed. The musculature and bone configuration issues silver creek...

I wouldn't worry about them. As bloomagoo said, they are the real deal.
They'll be at the iFFF Fly Fishing Festival at WCU on May 16-17.

Re: Who designed the Winston WT and LT?

I wish I knew what I'm doing wrong. I have a few BIIx's in different line weights and they just plain work for me.
Maybe I should ruin the action of them by using a crutch line that is overweight...

Re: Sling shot techniques?

If you ever saw Joe Humphrey toss a bow and arrow cast 60-70' with a light weight rod you'll know long B&A casts can be made. Like Joe though, be prepared to sell your soul to the devil to get it...

Re: Do Fake Winstons Exist?

If the rod was purchased under the guide program the purchasers name will be painted on the rod. This helps prevent unscrupulous guides from turning them over for a gain. This is a condition the...

Re: Mercury

If these issues are from fish in waters we assume are pristine, it really makes me wonder about fish imported from countries with little to no health, safety and environmental concerns.

Re: Little tricks to share

On short leaders I use the hook keeper. On leaders long enough that the nail knot would have to pass through the guides I use the reel foot technique.
Nautilus offers a cool hook keeper. I just...

Re: I'm getting a Shirley Temple curl

I end up keeping whatever band comes on the spool but keep the tippet end off to the side and not in the grommet. It is a pain finding the tag end sometimes but life is full of compromises.
If you...

The suggestion to get a good instructor is spot on. It will shorten the learning curve and give you something books, video's and practicing alone cannot give you... instant feedback.

I wonder if the redesigned spool on the Litespeed Series IV might help eliminate the line tumbling problem a few people seem to have.
The backing is now channeled into the curved arbor which seems...

Save your GPS on the cheap

I had my GPS and a neoprene 'coozy' in the glove box; added the two together and came up with a means to protect the GPS from scratches and maybe a broken screen.
