Re: Parachutes

The body of a parachute fly rides in the surface film and is more visible to the fish, compared to a standard dry that floats on its tail and hackle tips with the body above the surface. Some people...

Re: Is it still fly fishing if you do it with a spinning reel

I would call it spin fishing with a fly, not fly fishing.

To me 'fly fishing' is defined by the rod and line you use, not the terminal tackle.

I would call it fly fishing with bait if you fish...

Re: Who still uses a vest?

I have bought several lumbar packs and sling packs over the years, but I am just so used to where everything is in my old Orvis Super Tac-L-Pac vest that I haven't yet found the pack I like better. ...

Re: Backpacking, What flies to take?

Fish in remote areas where you have to backpack in are usually less selective, so any decent small assortment of colors and sizes should get the job done. More important than picking which flies is...

Re: "The Movie" -- back on Netflix

He was born at the wrong time. If only he had been able to wait until the jumping carp got there he would have set aside his Montague, taken up bowfishing, and never looked back.

Re: New Mexico Fly Fishing

I hear the Rio Chama is very good. Hoping to get there with a detour to Pagosa Springs myself later this year.

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

Lighten up a little! This whole thread is tongue in cheek. We've been caricaturing snobs on both sides. What we're really griping about is inflated product prices.

Re: Mayfly hatch so large is showed up on doppler radar

On Lake Champlain in northern Vermont we get big hatches of Hexagenia limbata ("Hexes") and Litobrancha recurvata ("Brown Drakes"). Do you know what species yours are? They look like our Champlain...

Re: new hamshire scoop

There's lots of good fishing in NH, especially northern NH, but it can be variable as to what's fishing well when.

These guys are one of the better known fly shops in NH. Stop in when you get...

Re: Best reel for a classic trout Rod?

First, decide whether you prefer a classic-looking small arbor or a newer mid or large arbor design. Then, decide whether what kind of check or drag system you want (or whether you are indifferent)....

Re: Orvis Sink tip system

You certainly can use it. It will have less effect on the casting properties of an 8 weight rig than a 3-5 weight rig, because the proportion of incremental weight it adds will be lower. But it...

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

Well okay, but it's those "signs of honest use" that I was referring to. There's a difference between "signs of honest use" and price tags still hanging from a spotless, unwrinkled, top-of-the-line...

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

Not true. Your waders have mud and slime on them. Your reels have dings.

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

Perhaps I should be more specific and say that the 10-year old one performs every bit as well as it did when I first bought it, and every bit as well as the most recent one I bought, three product...

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

No, there's a difference.

Planned obsolescence is when a product is designed to wear out quickly, so you have to buy another one.

Product life cycle is how long a given product remains on...

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

Truth, and it applies to all gear, not just lines. The whole industry seems to be caught up in a trend toward shorter and shorter product life cycles, which means you can usually find lots of great...

Re: Clear Fly Line adavantegs?

That's what it boils down to: does the advantage of lower visibility outweigh the disadvantage of line memory and handling difficulty? There isn't a single correct answer; it depends on the...

Re: The Shimano Beancounters Just Wrecked Loomis

Bingo. If Shimano wants to drop the warranty, they should also drop the price of an NRX down to $250 or $300 to compete with the mid-market offerings. They would sell a ton of them. They could...

Re: 20lb OR 30lb Dacron backing on Salmon rig

Thanks, but I've been fly fishing for almost 50 years, salmon fishing for almost 20, and I know how to attach my lines. (I usually use a Bimini twist and loop-to-loop connection to attach line to...

Re: 20lb OR 30lb Dacron backing on Salmon rig

I prefer 30# dacron if I have the reel capacity. I don't like the idea of backing that has a substantially lower breaking strength than my fly line. I can live with losing a fish, but I don't want...
