Re: Making Physics Fun

Very cool.

The pedantic in me, though, is bugged by one comment in the Galileo's Parabola piece. It says the ball falls in a 'parabolic curve' after it flies off the ramp.

It doesn't.

Its...

Re: Why no g5 fast rod from sage?

I broke the tip off a 486-4 ONE last summer.
I still have no idea at all how it happened. One minute it was fine, the next the tip was just hanging there.
Sage fixed it, but the cause is still a...

Re: Do we need expensive rod to fly fish with?

I posted this originally in another thread.
It's about some research that shows what happens when you tell people that superior equipment will help them perform better.

Can performance brands...

Re: Wading- How do you protect your smart phone?

I've tried at least three of the dedicated waterproof phone bags.
I always come back to the freezer bags.
The dedicated holders have always leaked or had closures that failed.
The freezer bags are...

Re: 2nd Rod build, Copper theme for my dad.

Very nice job.

Did you use metallic copper thread? I would have thought the metallic threads were too stiff to use for wraps.

Re: Age of folks on the forum

69 in May.

Isn't slowing me down, much, yet.

Started at 8 or 9 with my father.

Re: Looking for Photos

Consider one more thing if you're thinking of posting photos or sending them to someone.

Depending on how you set up your camera, the photos may contain a bunch of personal information in the...

Re: Hilarious Video

This is a good opportunity to ask "What would you do?"

I think I might run in the same direction as the 'terrorist'. This on the, possibly false, assumption that he's not interested in dying just...

Re: 2016 5 WT Shootout

I have no dog in the current 5 wt. shootout fight, owning exactly zero of the rods they tested.

However, just after reading the shootout article, I came across a study done at Notre Dame about how...

Re: Warning Label - On a Fly Rod...Really?

If you read all the warning labels on a ladder, you'd never set a foot on the thing.

Re: Don't you wish we did this to tackle thieves?

I wonder how long it will take the ambulance chasers to track down the 'victims'.

Not long, I think.

Re: Setting Up For Ultralight

The Classic Ultralight is a good little reel. Although I've not used it with a 3 wt. line - usually it has a 1 or 2 wt. on it for me.
The Redington CT is a good rod. You might consider going even...

Re: Fluorocarbon...Fact or fiction?

Maybe it's my fault and not the line's, but I just can't get fluorocarbon to work.

I've tried at least five brands. Makes no difference. The usual failure is at the hook, with either a cinch knot...

Warm water fishing for a change

Visiting in FL, I just had to try some fly fishing for bass around here.
I brought a home-built TXL-F 3 wt. as a freshwater rod, so that was the choice.

Couple things I found:

Bass are really...

Re: ZXL Respect

The 280-4's ERN on both rods I have is in the upper 2 wt. range, 2.7-2.9.
Long distance casting isn't what I use these for, so I usually use a 'heavy' 2 wt. line, like SA GPX.
I'm sure a 3 wt....

Re: Echo 3 & 3S Fly Rods

I have an Echo 3, 7' 6" 3wt.

I like it a lot. It has a lot of backbone for a lightweight rod. The first time I used it I got into some big brook trout, 16-19". I was very impressed with how it...

Re: Sage One "Elite" with extra tip clearance

Agree.
I bought 5 TXL-F blanks (1,2,3,4 wt. at 7'10"; 4 wt. at 6'10").
But, then, I'm a little nuts when it comes to rods.
I've finished two, the 1 wt. and the 3 wt.

Re: Wading Shoes

I'd add studs.
As RipTide says, most streams are pretty good for walking or rock hopping.
Some, though, are not good at all.
The Ellis River below the covered bridge in Jackson is awful.
The...

Re: Tips for high wind

Something that works for me is what I would call an 'exaggerated stop'.

Just before you stop the forward cast, give the rod an extra punch of speed. A haul here will make it even better.

I fish...

Re: Hard drive failure

It's possible that all is not lost.
There are recovery services around. If the drive didn't go up in flames, it may be recoverable.
At least you may get your pictures. The drive may not be usable...

Re: Buy JUST a rod sock???

I've bought a few from them, too.

They make them without ties, too, if that's what you want.

I've been very satisfied.

Re: What Flies do You Use During......

In my parts of the woods, midge nymphs work, size 18-24.
Lots of people use small CJs. Some really small.
So do SJWs in various colors. Beaded ones seem better.
Finally, streamers and Woolly...
