Yes, the South Platte runs near Greeley. I've never fished in that area, but upstream a short ways in/around Denver the SP is mostly a warm water fishery - carp and a few smallmouth bass.

I don't know what the "best" would be, but I'd think that damselfly, dragonfly, chironmids, leech, baitfish patterns would work. Or maybe one that imitates fish food pellets.

Generally, they just show campgrounds. Otherwise they indicate public access - which could be a place to park for a few hours or overnight.

I spotted it while driving along the gravel road. It was actively feeding and moving a fair amount. You can see how well it stands out.

Here's some things that worked for me..
+ Start early or stay later at well known locations.
+ Be willing to walk, hike, scramble over some rocks, bushwhack, don't be bothered by road noise, etc

There is another access off of Gross Dam Road (which is reached via Hwy 72/Coal Creek Canyon if coming from the Golden area). Technically there are two access points - the first parking lot you come...

I'd suggest getting some maps. If you are looking for places with new names ...the Colorado River, Williams Fork, Gore Creek, Eagle River, Ten Mile Creek, Clear Creek and the Arkansas River...
