Re: 2 piece vs 4 piece fly rods

Interesting that the only rod I ALWAYS leave in the back seat of my truck is one of the few 2-pc rods I own. Long rod tubes are easy to fit crossways in a full-size truck!

Re: 2 piece vs 4 piece fly rods

Used to be that a 2-piece rod provided some level of better "feel" than a 4-piece due to less joints (e.g. - less potential "flat spots"). However, with today's graphite and rod forming technology...

Re: Best Nymph

I agree with the minimalist approach - Dave's Harvestor Midge is super simple and very effective - TMC 2499 SPBL, black tungsten bead, Danville 6/0 brown/rust thread and fine black Ultra wire. No...

Re: Do You Use an Net / An Catch An Release

Whether to use a net or not depends on what kind of fish, the size of the fish, and what I plan to do with it. For fish I plan to keep and eat (salmon, hatchery steelhead, etc .) I do the same thing...

Re: the ridiculous that's not so ridiculous

I have used the Ty-Rite tools for years. They work great with the really small nymphs, midges and drys. You can even reach into a flybox and grab the hook of the fly to pull one out of the box -...

Re: What Keeps You From Going to Alaska to Fish?

Last trip I made to Alaska was in 2007. The last few years the only thing that has kept me from going have been pesky medical issues. This year is blocked, but I am thinkling 2013 is the right year...

Re: Gunnison River Fly Tying Kit

You are heading the right direction to avoid the kits - buy really good tools, buy whatever vice you can best afford, and fly materials to make up specific flies you know will work in your area (get...

Re: Reel Art!

Absolutely beautiful! However, I bet I would have to sell most of my current rods & reels to be able to afford to buy it! :shocking:

I think this falls into the category: If you have to ask the...

Re: furled leader

I believe the Spiderwire is impregnated with Teflon, and it floats nicely. After many hours of fishing it has a tendency to sink into the surface of the water, but usually no more than an inch -...

Re: A Case for Half-Weight Lines

Looking at the lines in this smaller chart, and allowing for the Rio Grand being stated as 1/2 weight heavier, it appears that all your measured weights are at least one full Aftma weight heavier...

Re: Wind knots in tippet or leader

I have to disagree with you on this one Rip, at least when it comes to leaders! Depending on the leader material you can often get knots out of a leader with no damage, especially furled leaders...

re: Do you still have the first fly fishing outfit you ever bought?

Absolutely! A Garcia Conolon 3-star 8' 6/7wt fiberglass rod with a Medalist #1392 reel - bought in 1966 from the only hardware store in a little town in Southern Missouri - with my first paycheck...

Re: furled leader

Absolutely - I have been fishing some furled leaders made out of SpiderWire - starting with 6lb test Spiderwire (green) and making 6' - 7' furled leaders, you end up with 4 strands at the tippet ring...

Hi Dan,

Waters will vary from 3'-7' or 5'-15' depending on where I fish the rivers, with both slow to fast current depending on water release from the generation dams. I will also try the DH rod...
