Re: 2nd week with the Fly Rod

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. My kids fly fish with me. They got bit by the fishing bug at an early age too, and progressing into fly fishing just happened naturally. One completely turned to the...

Re: Guide Costs and Gratuities

I couldn't agree more. They earn the tip & on top of it, they pay taxes on that tip whether they get a tip or not. If you don't tip those workers, they'll still pay the 20% worth of taxes from your...

Re: Guide Costs and Gratuities

When I used to use guides regularly, I typically have given at least $50. Most of my guides have gotten $250-450 for half a day. I'll go up beyond 20% gratuity if they have treated me great & done a...

Re: Big Trout, Small Flys

biggest Brookie I've caught her in Michigan was 13" & that is considered a real monster anymore around here. Would love to get some dandies like those on for a ride. Great photos...

Re: really awesome video on mousing

Great video, well, except for the music!

I mouse all the time, but do it at dusk and after dark. I'll have to give it some more time during the day. Love mousing at night wading down the river in...

Re: New fly rod.

I don't think a 6 wt is enough, at least for the carp we fish for. They are a nasty nasty fight. 8wt OR even higher. I got a 9 wt after hooking into one with my 8 wt Orvis Helios & realizing it...

Re: Guided trips and fishing spots

I'm not a guide.

With that said, I've only had one guide ask me to not tell anyone else about his spot. I agreed, and I have fished that run many times. Never told a sole. What was great about...

20lb OR 30lb Dacron backing on Salmon rig

We fish for salmon here in Michigan on the Betsie River, and there are plenty of logs to get hung up on. Anyways, just wondering if using 30lb backing would be better/best for a 8wt Salmon set up?

Re: What fly did you catch your first trout on?

ISO

I've caught most of my fish on this pattern. I fish mostly in june and july, and that is what is happening in my neck of the woods!

Re: Salmon and steelhead rod

Congrats on the outfit. Love my Orvis equipment. I started out about 22 years ago & I started with Orvis because of their customer service and help via the phone (catalog purchase, no internet no...

What rod wt for #6 dry Hex pattern

I'm getting a new rod for my daughter, and she'll be using it for several things, but mainly for Brown Trout in June/July while tossing the mighty Hex, dry flies in a #6. We fish Iso/Isonychia in...

Re: A vest with a fish pouch too...

I remember this. I actually grabbed some ferns & dip them into the cold river and tucked them into my present vest to help keep the fish cool till I got back.

Re: Fishing Location Suggestions

If you can get to Grayling Michigain in the next 10 days, the Hex, Hexagenia, is about to explode. It started about 4 days ago, and usually goes for about 3 weeks. Done by July 15-20 most years. I...

A vest with a built in creel too...

My vest has had it for a few seasons. I've sewed it up several times & it continues to fall apart. Nice Orvis vest. Anyways, I was at my fly fishing shop today & the numerous vests did not have a...

Re: Salmon and steelhead rod

This is not a new rod, so you'll have to get it used, likely. Found them on ebay in the $3-500 range the other day. Well worth a look.

Re: Salmon and steelhead rod

I've got 4 salmon rods, and my Orvis Helios is by the best. If you cast all day long, it is worth the investment just for the weight savings. Feels like a 5 wt rod in hand VS a 8wt. Really gets those...

Re: Fly Fishing Reel Weight

I'd much rather have a 6-7 wt outfit, and be a bit heavy, then have a sweet little 3 wt in hand & have a 18'+ fatty strike. When you here the words "4 wt outfit", it sounds so close to a 6 wt, but in...

Re: Another silly CB/Walkie Talkie question.. monitor band.

Believe it or not, there are still plenty of dead zones here in Michigan, and my favorite fishing and hunting areas are in the middle of them. I did some research on the ham radio forums. There are...

Haven't left the rods, but I left my bow hanging outside at the bow club AFTER putting the arrows in the case & locking it up for the long ride up north. Opened the case up at 4am to see it empty!...

Re: Down to 3.

I got the Cabela's Stowaway 6 Fly Rods 4wt 7'6" 6 section rod for backpacking in on trips & it turned out to be a charm. Caught a dozen trout on it in a jiffy, and I only fished a couple hours with...
