Estimating Trout Age?

Hey guys,

I've been reminiscing lately about some of the fish I have caught in the past. Just pondering what their life has been like, what they have gone through, how many times they've been...

Re: Hooked Finger

The funny moment when the inconvenience of numb fingers became convenient. I've only had a couple times where I buried the barb in my skin. Now I don't have to worry about that since all my flies are...

Re: Big trout surrounded by little trout: what do you do?

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I'm eager to get out and try what you all have recommended. Hopefully I'll be able to go fishing within the next couple weeks!

Re: Big trout surrounded by little trout: what do you do?

Well, I never thought of using a streamer in this case... I'm not really confident with streamers yet just because I rarely fish with them, I guess. As for throwing a bigger fly out there, I've done...

Big trout surrounded by little trout: what do you do?

Ok so this might be a noob question but here goes nothing...

So you're fishing a river/creek/stream for trout, particularly wild trout, and you come up on a run/pool/flat and you see a BIG...

Re: 35 mm film canisters alternatives?

Anything will work, old prescription pill bottles, tic-tac containers, altoid cans, Camel-Bak elixir tablet tubes... Just use your imagination

Also, REI has an entire row of various containers...

Re: Winter Jacket Color

Dark and drab colors. Just look at the natural foliage and other things on the stream edge. Blend in with that. You don't need to get all crazy and go out in a ghillie suit, although that would be...

Re: Pond fishing for stocked trout

I've often wondered about the idea of a "pellet" fly for recently stocked hatchery trout. Seems like a good idea. I've always targeted wild trout waters rather than those with stocked fish, so I'm...

Re: The Local Stream

So glad to see your local creek is still flowing! I'd kill for the same conditions on the little one that I Used to frequent... Mine is all dried up now, no water, no fish. All of the creeks down...

Re: Streamer Strategies

Great article, Larry! I'm guilty of being the angler he mentions in the first paragraph. I've often tied on a streamer and only fished it for a few minutes with no luck. Then I just return it back to...

Re: Netflix movie about John Muir Trail

I'm watching it right now and I've gotta say... I'm pretty disappointed and actually quite frustrated. There's no way in hell that I could go on a journey like that and not fish. They're passing up...

Re: Wild Trout Day

Excellent trip report! Makes me jealous that you only have to go 90 miles/2 hours to get to this stream. I have to drive about 3 hours to get to a (probably the same) trout stream that's not offline...

Re: The luckiest man, a trip home.

Awesome writeup! Those boys are lucky to have a dad like you who takes them out to enjoy the outdoors and to teach them the addiction of fly fishing!

Re: Will it work: Fly line end-loop "idea"

Thanks for the responses, guys! The line that's looped to the fly line in my picture is just a piece of 25lb fluoro. It's actually not even a leader. I just had it right next to me so I put a loop in...

Re: Will it work: Fly line end-loop "idea"

Thanks for the speedy response! I didn't even think about cutting down the outer coating to make it even more streamlined. It seems like the mono really bites down on the coating this way. I pulled...

Will it work: Fly line end-loop "idea"

So I've been trying to reinvent the wheel, I guess... I've recently been thinking of a different way to create an end-loop on the fly line that doesn't consist of using a piece of thick mono with a...

Re: Flingin' in the rain

I've never had an issue fishing in the rain. I just do what I would do any other day. The only difference is the broken surface from the raindrops might make it harder for the fish to pick up the dry...
