Re: The Shimano Beancounters Just Wrecked Loomis

Funny. We are G. Loomis dealer. Didn't get the memo about this change...
We'll see, if this is actually the case or just a rumor at this point.

If it's true, gonna hurt the Fly Rod Sales for...

Re: The Shimano Beancounters Just Wrecked Loomis

Not sure that this is the situation. Go to the G. Loomis website. Look at the warranty section. Still claims that it is a lifetime warranty to the original owner. Plus still mentions the...

Re: Does made in USA matter?

Been thinking about this issue lately. Have come to the conclusion that the USA made rods are undeniably "better" than their Asian made counterparts.

There are some Korean built rods like the...

Re: Rod Warranty

I think that it is fair to pay actual repair costs for a broken rod rather than a flat warranty/replacement charge. The extremely high retail prices of premium rods today is probably a result of the...

Re: Loomis NRX LP?

Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout or Mastery Textured Trout are my favorites. Also like the Airflo Super-Dri Elite, and maybe a Rio Gold (although it may overload the LP a little).

Re: 6wt rod 8ft ish.

Couple of other "short" #6's that won't break the bank. But may be hard to locate.

Greys Streamflex XF2, 8 1/2', #6 - more of a "trout" action, great for terrestrials, hopper/dropper rigs, etc....

Re: Scott Rods?

I have a Radian 9', #5 - Love it. Kind of seems like a rod in a class by itself.
I like the S/A Mastery Trout and Airflo Elite Trout as the best pairings with this rod. The Rio Gold kind of mutes...

Re: Scott Rods?

I have only recently come to the Scott party. Everything about this brand exudes class. I now have a couple of G2's and a Radian. They fish about as well as anything that I have tried. ...

Re: Loomis NRX LP?

Agree with the Trident guys here. NRX LP is a good short to mid range, dry fly rod. Most similar to Sage ZXL or Winston BIIIX. Would not call this rod an "all-arounder" unless you are only going...

Re: 9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

I humbly retract my statement that a 9', #5 is for a beginner/intermediate fisherman only. Many, very good, fly anglers use this combination effectively and are very satisfied. Glad it works for...

Re: 9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

Name calling and flaming aside, I am glad that this thread has stimulated some discussion.

I want to be clear on a couple of things.

The original premise of this wasn't to ask the question...

9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

The Fly Fishing industry keeps telling us that the ubiquitous, 9', #5 is the standard for trout fishing. This is interesting, because that particular length/line weight combination doesn't do...

Re: Rio Outbound Short help!

The Outbound Short is super heavy for its listed line weight. I have found that it is like 1-1.5 line weights heavier than listed. To handle this, you need to slow down and lengthen your stroke. ...

Re: Echo Fly rod questions

At the $300-$400 price point:

Echo3 9', #6 is an excellent streamer rod (it is what it does best) at it's price point. Super tough blank, good components and cork for a Korean built product. ...

Re: G.Loomis - A New Industry Standard?

Shimano's handling of the G. Loomis fly fishing division has been the downfall of the brand in the fly fishing world. Although, its ownership has probably enhanced the brand in the conventional...

Re: Redington torrent vs sage approach

Sage Approach by a mile. Made in USA, and much better performing and casting rod.

IMO, Redington rods are average at best. The only notable exception being the Classic Trout series that are...

Re: My want, your recommendation

FWIW, here are some notable rods that I have casted in this range. My favorites are listed 1st and in order of preference.

Med action rods:
Scott G2 8'8", #5
Sage Circa 589-4
Sage...

Re: 6-Weight Renaissance

Most of the time (with a few notable exceptions), I have found that the #6 weight offerings in a particular rod series are superior casting and fishing tools when compared with their #5 weight...

Re: Vintage sage RPL fans

My two favorites from the orginal RPL's are the 586 and 690. Probably don't need a "enhanced" line like a GPX or Rio Grand for the 586 - good choice would be a S/A Trout, Rio Gold, etc. The 690 is...

Re: Vapen or Passport....need help!

I would recommend that you cast a few before committing to buy.

Just test cast a Redington Vapen 9'6", #5, and was very underwhelmed. Super stiff, and not real responsive, and HEAVY. No feel...

Re: Question regarding oversize rod for smaller flies?

It is a much better situation to have a heavier line weight rod for small flies than an underweight/light line rod with big flies or wind.

I find myself fishing more with my #6 and even #7 and #8...

Re: Loomis.....losing fans and market share?

I have long been a "Sage Guy". Have owned and fished a wide variety of them over the years, always thought that they were the "best", period. Funny thing was, very few of them ever "stuck" with me....

Re: Line for a Loomis NRX 9' 7 wt rod

FWIW, The line that I like best with my NRX #7 9', is the Scientific Angers Mastery Steelhead Taper. It has a long belly head that loads the rod very well, and might be a bit better at distance than...
