thanks wiliam. so a 8/16 will be 3/8,thats what the pole is up to 3/4 so that would be a 9, so a 8 or 9 should be fine but I'll read the common cents.

ok, I have a Daiwa graphite comp A14190 Apollo 1616 8 1/2' spin that Iwant to convert to a fly rod. it's cast weight is 3/8 to 3/4 oz., line weight is 8-16 lb's. it is a med action.

I only put on about 40' of backing and cut my DT in half. Onlywhen fishing small streams and not big trout. never had a problem.

Thanks Cochise. I do have a 8' #7 old glass rod but thinking it's a little heavy an short for these rivers, so, looks like I'll be building a new fly rod soon.

I have never fished the Madison or the Yellowstone and was wanting to know what would be the best pole weight to fish these two rivers. drifting and wading. not into spey. thanks for your help....

Barham, I am with ya. I am 68 and I like the old way. never had a prob on any rod and I fish salt a lot and fresh. have hung a lot of 30+ lb salmon and no problem.
I suppose the new stuff is ok but...

Jeff I don't know how long you have been fishing with a fly rod but practice a lot with what ya got. learn and read. if I have any extra line out I hold the line with my rod hand till I get loose...

hmm, I fish with a 8' 7wt daiwa that I bought in 1973 and have pulled 15lb steel out of the rouge river in Oregon many times with no problem.
