Re: Best 5wt for $150?

I agree with "racine", for $150-180 and free shipping I don't see a better deal than the A5. I've fished one for several years and like as well as my Winston B2x and Sage ZXL.

Re: Is there a big difference in rods?

Reading the posts about expensive v inexpensive fly rods, I remember that I bought a Scierra IC3 9' 4wt from Cabelas on closeout several years ago for less than $50.00. I had never heard of the...

Re: Best Bang for the Buck Blank

For whatever its worth, I built a Mudhole MHX 8' 4wt rod that is really nice. If you want a truly light and fast rod, look at the Pac Bay Quickline series. I built and fish a 9ft 5wt that I have...

Re: Best 5wt for $150?

You might look at an Aleka A8. I have a 9ft 5wt that cost slightly more than $100.00 online. It only weighs 2.8 ounces, is quite fast (somewhat like my Sage Zaxis). I use a light reel with 6wt...

Justin:
I live in Meridian, TX, just south of the metroplex. I assume you will be getting the new models in; if so, please let me know at d_christian@bosquecounty.us and I will drive the 75 miles...

Allen XA2 rod

Did I miss something? I hear nothing about Allen's XA2 and see it is no longer listed on its website. What happened?

Re: One rod for Montana

Although I have several rods and have taken several with me on trips to Montana, I find I use my Sage zaxis 9ft 5wt more than any.

Re: Which Winston?

Dear Runningfish:
In reply to your inquiry about the line and action on the B2x 6wt, I use Rio Gold 6wt. I can best describe the action as lighter and a slightly softer tip than my Sage 9ft 5wt and...

Re: Which Winston?

When it comes to the question of the best fly rod, I am reminded of Mark Twain's view to the effect that a difference of opinion is what makes horse racing. I have many fly rods, most in the 5 to...

Re: Winston WT taken of their web site

Its sad if what has been said here about the demise of Winston is true. I have many fly rods, but my very favorite is an old B2x 9' 6wt and my wife's is a B3x 9' 5wt. I also have a 9' 5wt WT that...

Line for Sage VPS

I recently acquired a 9' 5wt Sage VPS which I don't need but am glad to have. I have several Sage rods, among them a Sage ZXL in the same length and weight. I use Rio Gold 5wt on it. I intend to...

Re: What Rod Blank to Buy?

I have built 9ft 5wt rods on both Mudhole MHX and PacBay Quikline blanks. They both turned out well with the Quikline being faster. You might look into these.

Aleka A8

This last thing I need is another 9' 5wt fly rod. However, that did not keep me from ordering an Aleka A8 in that size. The price was less than $150.00. I was curious about it and felt I could...

Re: High Build vs Lite Build

I know you fellows are ahead of me with the modern one and two part epoxy based coatings, but at 73 I am entitled to be old fashioned. I enjoy using Helsman Spar Varnish gloss or satin thread wraps...

Re: Matrix 7' 3wt Blank

For whatever its worth, I recently built a 8' 4wt 4 piece rod from a Mudhole MHX kit. I really liked the action, but unfortunately my son did also and ended up with it!
I think the entire kit...

Re: Best Low End 9'5wt

I have too many 9ft 5wt expensive rods. However, one of my favorites in an Albright A5 which I bought years ago for less than $150.00. I see one listed on Ebay for $75.00. Naturally, I don't know...

Re: HELP Choosing a reel

Of the way too many reels that I have for a 5 weight outfit at around $150.00, I would suggest a Lamson Konic 1.5 or 2.0, Ross Flyrise or if you are willing to approach $200.00 a Ross CLA, or a Okuma...

You better be careful who you tell about using spar varnish! I mentioned on the Robdbuilding forum that I had used Helmsman Spar Varnish on a 9ft 5wt Quickline project and got...

I have wondered if there is any relevant difference in weight between natural graphite finishes on fly rods and those in the majority that are painted a certain color. G Loomis, for instance, sells...

Re: Ruler on Net handle

You don't want the measuring to be too accurate or precise because then you would have to tell the truth about how long the fish was! It's better to estimate on the high side.

Re: Rod and reel for starting out

I would check out the Redington Crosswater sets made up of rod, reel and line for less than $150.00. I have many of the above but the CW rod and reel is still not bad. After these, without too much...
