Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

It was a clouser minnow. A big bass hook, I think a 4/0. I am thinking of upgrading to a better quality line, and upsizing one size too. I think the bit of extra weight will help load the rod a...

Re: poppers won't pop?

Are you striping the line with your rod tip high (about eye level) or low (pointed toward your fly)? I had a similar problem, and it seemed to work a lot better if I held my rod tip up at about a 45...

Re: Best bang for the buck.

I need an almost idiot proof reel, and it seems that there is something about that design that you have to pay close attention to the line coming out of the reel, on top of all the other tasks at...

Re: Best bang for the buck.

I have read several online reviews. Many from the Orvis website. Many people have said that there line will get caught and will not feed out when the fish run, leader snaps and they lose the fish....

Re: Best bang for the buck.

I meant Hydros. Not Helios. My bad.

Re: Best bang for the buck.

I have heard a similar issue with the new Orvis Helios. Many have lost fish because the line gets caught, or bad bird's nesting. Is there anything that can be done about this, different technique...

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

I am starting to believe that I was using too big of a fly for the rod. As it would seem to drag through the air and fall. Even when I was giving it extra thump at the end. I switched to a smaller...

Re: Best bang for the buck.

The biggest reason for the step up from an 8 to a 9 is the short casts or the fight of the fish? Is is common place for a good fly shop to let you try the rods before you buy? I would expect this...

Re: Best bang for the buck.

I like the Healing Waters because they donate money to the organization. I am all for helping out wounded veterans, and if I can do it with buying a fly rod that happens to be good and usable, seems...

Lightbulb Re: Best bang for the buck.

Seems to be more fun, and will give me my own unique set up. Plus I know exactly what I have and its capabilities, instead of just reading a box.

I'm feeling a TFO Healing Waters with an Orvis...

Question Best bang for the buck.

I have recently come into a small amount of money, about $600, and I am looking to finally get my first "real" fly rod. I am looking at 8wt or bigger, and for salt water. Reds, bones, baby tarpon...

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

I seemed to think it was the sound of the line through the guides. But, I could be mistaken. I watched other videos of his, and what I wouldn't give to be half as good a fly caster as he is. Wow.

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

I was afraid of that. I use the original line that came on my 12 year old set up for yard practice. Never been cleaned or dressed, and I don't use a leader/tippet. I am probably not benefiting...

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

He must have got you from close range, those things didn't work too far out. I think that's why they were mostly gone by the time I got there. We had the BeanBags to play with. :-)

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

The rod looks good, as do the guides. But on closer inspection, I am starting to think it could be the line. Although new, it is a generic stock line, and doesn't seem of top quality. I will...

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

I don't believe so, it is a general use WFF 6wt. It came on the reel, as it was an "outfit" package. It doesn't feel different through my fingers than other lines I have used.

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

Silver,

I think you hit the nail on the head. Especially with the video. It would appear that I have been hauling way too early. Which apparently was okay on my stiffer old rod, but a habit I...

Re: Double Haul.... Won't.....

JPB. I'm a sight only fisherman as well. Love to see what I am going for.

Swirlchaser,

Thanks for the tip! I was hoping it was something I was doing wrong, and not something wrong with my...

Double Haul.... Won't.....

New to the forum, here! Read almost every thread about casting, and can't find anyone with a similar issue. I am not exactly new to the sport, but by no means a great caster.

When I use my 8ft...
